Retrograde step? Possibly, but certainly not brave or forward thinking. I would have chosen Lalana and built the side around him. He captained our stripy friends down the road and will, in my opinion, be captain of Liverpool when Gerrad retires.
We have a spineless, clueless manager and Rooney is horrendously overrated, most of his goals coming in friendlies and/or against teams like Andorra. He's also got a horrendous attitude and is a horrible role model. Lallana would be a good shout for captain, although it sounds like playing for England has turned him to an arrogant twat (and I don't think many Southampton supporters would disagree with me), what a surprise
Wayne Rooney to my mind is no longer good enough to play for England, little alone being named the new captain. Pointless decision by Hodgson. I personally cannot think of any current England player capable of carrying out that role, or who deserves to do so.
I think England are going through a two year turn around on bringing new fresh young players in and in two years time Callum Chambers will be England Captain, but until the new brigade arrive and settle into International football we really don't have a player to wear the arm band of international quality. I am hoping that giving Rooney the arm band might help him play to his true potential for a couple of years.
