Jack Whatmough has been called up for an England under-18 training camp.

The 17-year-old centre-back will visit the National Football Centre at St George’s Park in Burton between January 5-7.

It caps a great few weeks for the Pompey youth product who made his senior debut against Southend last month.

Academy manager Andy Awford said: “It’s good recognition for Jack just to be selected for the training camp and in my opinion it’s thoroughly deserved.

“There are some fixtures for the under-18s before the end of the season and a squad will be picked from those taking part.

“People will already know what I think of Jack – both as a player and a person. He deserves plenty of plaudits.

“It’s also a testimony of the good work done by the support staff he works with at Pompey, both at academy and first team level.

“And it’s fantastic news for the club. We had two lads playing for England last season and now Jack’s been noticed. It’s nice that all our hard work is being recognised.

“It’s a great learning experience for Jack, who will link up with the best players in the country at his age group. It will only help him to improve as a player.”
