Moyes? No self-respecting Scotsman would take the England job. Wenger? No one in the FA would dare give a Frenchman the job. We're a long way off being a top team aswell.
I'm serious. Imagine his work with the youth teams, and successfully introducing them to the senior squad - kicking out the under performing Lampard etc.
I see further decline, Wayne Rooney is the only real world class player of his age, and can't carry the mediocrity around him. The upcoming batch to fill the shoes of the big name underachievers on the way out, fill me with no confiedence at all either up against the best....depressing. As we're talking England I can say this, if Jack Wilshere can sort the rest of his life out, he has the potential to make the same impact as Rooney. Thats about it atm for me.
I agree with most of the above. You can try to find the best manager, anywhere in the world. however, he can only manage the raw materials he has at his disposal. Apart from the Yawning chasm in general levels of skill, from say, a team like Spain. There is also, always, the usual conflict between the clubs, and the England set-up, that exists.
We could have the best manager in the world, but our club and coaching set ups do not enhance our chances one little bit. We need a root and branch (I know it's a cliche but it's one that applies) review of the game, preferably by outsiders with no axes to grind. This needs to be acted on by a new, dynamic FA that is in charge of the whole game. At the moment the set up is something akin to a national government being in charge of everything except London and the South East. Unless the FA has more of a hold on the prem nothing will change.
Lidls almost had a point there, but he blew it. Shame. England aren't as good as a lot of the top teams in terms of technical ability, but nor do they have to be. The Premier League doesn't have as many players of outstanding technique as La Liga or even Serie A, but England has been well represented in the Champions League for quite a few years now. Capello needs to stop trying to get England to play like an Italian team. It doesn't work. The players aren't familiar with the style and it doesn't suit the personnel available. Up the pace, pick players that are on form and fit and play them in positions that they're comfortable in, preferably with players that they're very familiar with. When Bent was selected to lead the attack, it was because of how he'd been performing at Villa with Ashley Young and Stewart Downing. All three were available, yet Capello picked James Milner and Theo Walcott instead. Neither of which was playing well, either. Looking to the future and trying to focus more on the technical abilities of England's youth and improving the coaching and facilities of this country is admirable and should be pursued. There is something that the manager can do now though and he should do it as soon as possible.
Very true. Football moved on - we didn't. And now, we are so far behind the benchmark, that it would take a generation to recover the lost ground. Even if we started tomorrow - and that ain't gonna happen!
The players need more time together IMO. I'm not sure of how much this happens, but can't they meet up one day a week and train together? At least then they'd gel, but keep match fit for their clubs.
Sven has recommended Mourinho for the job. Sven obviously hasn't realised Mourinho being in charge of a team instantly makes them obnoxious - so if he was in charge of a team containing Terry, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard and Rio, the world would implode at that level of odiousness...
