Speaking to journalists at Melwood, the manager said: "He played centre-half in one of the games I took in last year when I went to see him. He played there in a 4-2-3-1.

"He's got a big future here, Emre. It's just been curtailed a little bit from the summer when he was trying to gain his fitness and he was injured - he had an ankle issue that made him miss training and he was in and out.

"He's got great athleticism and you saw his presence on the pitch [at Burnley]. He is an outstanding footballer and is a very, very young player who is just acclimatising to the game here.

"His favoured position is more of a defensive player, even though I've played him in an attacking role because I think that's something he can do more of. But if you asked him his profile, he likes to be in that sitting role where he can play and dictate the game as well as be physical in the challenge and duels.

"I thought he came on and was outstanding [at Burnley]. We needed to build the ball better, our possession wasn't so good and we lost the ball too quickly, which didn't give us a chance to get into good positions on the field in order to keep the ball.

"Him coming on gave us that assurance in possession and also physicality when we didn't have the ball.

"He's a player I know can play in a number of positions and play them well. He's someone whose influence will become greater as the season goes on."

    -

Personally I'm with Rodgers and like to see him attacking. He is such a strong running. But DM is not our strongest spot and it could be worth playing Can where he prefers to be.

I like that he has the flexibility to be able to play at the back as part of a 3, in a defensive position and pushed further up. I personally don't think he's as good further up as he isn't as creative as say Lallana/Sterling/Coutinho.

Don't shoot me down for hyping him up but I think he'd be better in a similar role to that of Toure. Playing him in a deeper position but with liscence to push on. He's such a big strong player for someone his age (he's still only 21) that when he gets the ball he can drive forward with a bit of pace and can be difficult to stop. He's got a good few years before he ges near his peak but if we can help him become that type of player it will be a real bonus. We've not had someone that can do that from CM since Gerrard in his mid 20's really.

I also get reminded of Yaya Toure when I see Can play.

I love to see as try a 424 system if we can get the right midfield partner for Can. A real solid player who is a pass master.

    ----------------Shielton-------------
    Flanagan-Toure-Sakho-Moreno
    ------------?????---Can--------------
    --Sterling---------------Markovic--
    --------Sturridge-??????-------------

Shut lads I'd like to see him play more than as a sub to start talking yaya

And I know it's just an example of position

My point is he's got to step up just to get his chance and then take it, never mind anything else

I think he's suited for the DM role, with creative license to roam forward because he's good at connecting the defenders to the forwards. He's pretty disciplined.

    ------------------GK-----------------
    -Flanagan--CB--Sakho--Moreno-
    -----------------Can------------------
    ------Henderson---Coutinho------
    -Markovic-----------------Sterling-
    ----------------Sturridge------------

Maybe too attacking but enough creativity in there.

    Nice team.

It may be to attacking for some games but not all. We'd just need to sign an alternative to Coutinho who is stronger defensively for those tougher games.

    I think the s
Signing youth works but takes year to establish if you dont already have a good foundation of experience already in place.

Yeah, why buy youth for a younger price and try and develop them into talented group of players when you can just go out and buy 5 world class players for £30m each instead.. no idea what the club is thinking.

Oh wait, maybe it's because we're Liverpool and not Chelsea or City..?

I told you arsenal have tried this crack and it doesn't work. The minute a player shows something they are off

I never mentioned 30 mil each but seeing you did that's only 150 mil and frankly all I need say is markovic, lallana, lovern!!!!!

In case you missed it there's a few real players out there for less than 30 mil....

And what are you planning on paying these 5 WC players? REckon they'd join for less than 100k a week like Can, Markovic, Moreno are all on?

He should be playing centre mid with Henderson, not Lucas and Gerrard combo.

using Henderson as a "wingback" is a ****ing disgrace. why is he playing him out of position and not playing Flano or Manquillo in their more favoured places?

Flanno is injured and Manquillo doesn't offer much going forward.

    I agree Manquillo should play.

I'm not sure Henderson fits in to this system. He'll do the job where ever you put him because he is that kind of player. But I dont think we will see his best aspects in any role in this system. His energy and athleticism are wasted in a static midfield. WB is probably the best spot for him as it is a runners role. But it is not his natural role. He is not a defender. Its WB or bench for Henderson in this shape. I'd try Manquillo and Can in place of Henderson and Gerrard respectively.

Can was a utility player at Leverkuson last season. He played DM, CM, LB, CB and LW during the course of the season. I think the season is mainly about him settling in and finding his place in the team. Rodgers obviously has ideas for him.

I think right now he is best suited to be a holding playing in a 4231 or a box to box player in a 433 or 41212.

He should be the 2nd DM alongside Lucas and given a bit more freedom to get forward.

    Flanagan-Toure-Sakho-Moreno
    ------------Lucas---Can--------------

    Like the above.
