I switched on to watch the Fulham game this evening which was being shown prior to the Stoke match later on. One of the pundits was Peter Reid and I sat in my own frontroom almost embarrassed that he was on my TV set. Will I be the only one who feels guilty everytime I see him on something now?
Personally I thought Peter Reid was a cross between Henry V and a saint. However, maybe his justifiable frustration had boiled over into indirectly criticising the squad at the expense of morale - "we lack any fire power up front", "we looked like rabbits in the headlights" etc. Three points last week and a clean sheet - if [IF] Fletcher can keep that going, maybe we say thanks, your money is no good in any bar in Plymouth, but goodbye and good luck. I have a feeling his departure had more to it than meets the eye anyway. Maybe he'd had enough?
Another story we may never know the ins and outs of but I still felt a little guilty that he wasn't with us anymore. It just feels like he was shafted even if he may not have been.
I agree with you Sensible I think he was shafted too and his days were numbered when he asked Dickdale on behalf of the players where all the money had gone !
I'm not actually saying he was shafted Gat but that it feels like he was. I think there is much more to it than just sacking him because the results were not good but it is a question of the real reason. Did he want to go and was this a way of him saving face or did he upset the dressingroom or Ridsdale or everybody. I haven't a clue if one,all or none of those are right. But, given what he did loyalty wise previously it still made me feel a tad guilty for him.
I don't think there is anything to go looking for regarding Peter Reids sacking............After 55 league matches of very average football..............and taking everything that he had gone through............and that was considerable..........and a top gent through it all...........he had forgotten how to win matches,as simple as that........I'm sorry if that upsets some people........results win over just being a very nice respected man.
I would have liked to see him get a job somewhere in the club - as I have mentioned - Chairman of Football? Good contacts and a friendly face for players to approach. Still like Mrs Lala I don't feel guilty - its not the fans or the club that can be blamed for his sacking. Just Ridsdale himself. But...As Plymborn has said: Results matter - obviously Fletcher did something right last week as we pulled off a convincing victory and clean sheet. Not saying Reid was a bad manager but the team looked so different in their play. Good luck Reidy where ever you fare!
It's unfair to criticise Reid for results, just yet anyway. Throughout his tenure he's been battling with a squad in flux with a myriad of departures and arrivals, understandably low morale and very limited funds & opportunities to recruit the players he'd really have liked. If - and it's a big if - Fletcher can do better with the same players in more than just one match, then we may surmise something wasn't right, but even then the improvement may be more to do with improving morale as things hopefully get back to normality rather than any fault of Reid's part.
So it's official ......................................sensible has feelings! That's kinda unique for a bloke
Can't see why you should feel guilty ,Sensible-you did'nt sack him,Ridsdale did. Many fans after reflection are coming around more to the idea that perhaps it was the expedient course of action. What sticks in peoples throats is that it was Ridsdale who took it upon himself to sack Reid-the bottom line is Ridsdale is clearly very unpopular,so how dare he?
Maybe guilty was too strong a word aka but it just felt a little uncomfortable. To be associated with a club that sacked somebody who had given all that Reid had given. Others up and down the country would look at this and think it was poor form and be quite right. If Fletcher goes on to turn the fortunes around then it will pale into history but it does look shabby from the outside. We have all said that Reid had an impossible task on his hands but if Fletcher can get results out of the same bunch then it is clear the task was maybe not as impossible as we all thought. Perhaps I just felt sorry for the guy.
We have a striker Gat but the rest of the team don't give him any service or play to his strengths. It remains to be seen if Fletcher can do better with them so it is a little early to say he will fail. They do need a few new recruits however and that is a luxury Reid never had to be fair. Maybe when we can pay players then a few more might just consider coming. It is the calibre of player that Fletcher can attract that slightly worries me but again that might be a little premature judgement wise.
You don't like him one jot so to be fair your opinion is slightly biased if you are honest. The only reason he would stitch them up is out of spite because of their dressingroom power. You would have to believe he was that spiteful and of course you are prepared to because of the fact you hate the man. I just don't see why he would be bothered. What we should be bothered about now is if Brent completes, who will be the football adviser as he openly admits not knowing anything about football. If results don't go well then does he have enough knowledge to get rid himself and replace. He can run a business from a business point of view that is clear but the rest is ???????
