Sunderland midfielder Ahmed Elmohamady feels the return of David Meyler will provide a timely lift to the Black Cats' campaign.

Meyler made his comeback as a last minute substitute against West Brom last weekend following eight months on the sidelines with knee ligament damage.

And although the Republic of Ireland international is still some way from being in the frame for a first-team spot, Elmohamady has welcomed the return of a popular figure in the dressing room.

Elmohamady told the Sunderland Echo: "Meyler's a fantastic player and I'm really pleased he came back.

"He's a good lad around the dressing room and it's hard for any player to come back from setbacks like that.

"To suffer two big injuries in eight months is really tough.

"But he's got a lot of fight and he'll help the team now

Simple really, who would he replace?

if Meyler is 100% fit then i'd have him in front of Cattermole and Colback and for what i've seen so far, Gardner

Would agree, think he will be a class act, however after 2 bad injuries so young I have concerns.

me anarl mate, just hope he doesn't play at Arsenal next week if he's not 110%, it's a game perfect for him as we'll be playing 4-5-1 or knowing bruce 4-6-0

Sorry guys, I just don't see it. Yes, he is a good squad player but not good enough to start at the minute. He still has a lot to learn and hopefully improve but ahead of Cattermole/Gardiner?

Has anyone seen the lad McClean play yet? I know it's a massive jump for him but I hope he can make it and give us something on the left.

Ha, good that you are reminding us all on your felllow countryman, good reviews so far, and doing well in the reserves...

Sure his chance will come....It'll be a total tactic change is he plays, as that would involve playing in un-chartered ground..

    Sorry mate, don't agree.

Meyler is a far better option than Clattermole IMO, providing he has recovered from the 2 injuries fully

if he can get back to where he was i think meyler and Gardner is potentially the best pairing in the middle

Depends on how much he's lost with the injuries he'll not be anywhere near his best for a while yet. As for replacing Catts I'd say yes but, knowing Bruce he'll be played in a 3 7 0 formation going for the 0-0 against Fulham at SOL.

Dunno bbp. They're getting on a bit. And Cloughie's ceased to be. He is an ex-centre forward. He is no more.
