Juventus winger Eljero Elia is set to leave the Italian club after just one season there.

Newcastle were first linked with the player in January, when there was a move to bring him to Tyneside on loan, or at least that’s what the reports said.

The 26 times capped Dutch International has lost his way in Italy, and he now hopes to get his career back on track, after playing just 5 times last season for Juventus, the Italian Champions.

The winger has handed in a transfer request, which has immediately granted by the club, and he had this to say to Eredivisie Live today:

“I want to play football again and have fun again.” “My agent will arrange it. He will talk to me if there are any developments.” “They have already told me I will be able to move to another club.”

Arsenal were interested in the player before he signed on at Juventus, and this lad may interest Newcastle, who are always interested in a mplayer who wants to prove himself.

He cost Juventus €9M (around £7.3M) when he signed for them last August 31st, the last day of the summer transfer window, and that seems a lot of money for Newcastle to pay, although he will come cheaper this summer.

Elia started his career in Holland at ADO Den Haag, before moving to FC Twente in 2007, where he really came into prominence, and then he moved to Hamburg in 2009 for around £6.5M.

Elia was named Dutch Football Talent of the Year in 2009, and he played 59 times for Den Haag with 6 goals and 3 assists and was at Twente for two seasons, where he played 73 times with 15 goals and 6*assists.

Elia spent two seasons at Hamburg before joining Juventus last summer, in*what*turned out to be have been a disastrous move for him, and he played for Hamburg 63 times with 8 goals and 11*assists.

I'd be a great addition to the NUFC squad without a doubt. But be aware, he has a bad temper at times and can be provoked easily into a fight.
Great technique and pace and his footing and passing are brilliant. Fits best on the left wing position but can also act as AM or even RW if needed.
His lack of consistancy is the only factor why he hasn't had that many caps for the Dutch national team. But he is still young, 25 years old. A great catch if you guys were to sign him. I think 4 to 5 million quid would be the right price to get him and a certainly the bargain of the season.

Cheers Cove. He's the type I would welcome. Pards has worked wonders with HBA's temperament so it could well work.

We are being linked with a few good players, mostly with temperament problems that have deterred bigger clubs... Can't help but think we've got the right strip colour for them anyway!

He's a good player, very quick. He is also versatile which we'll like this summer given the number of games we have ahead. Whether he is a realistic I don't know. What happened to that other Juve player Krasic? In January all the talk was he wanted out, Spurs/Man U linked. Did he stay? Not really a realisitic one for us but he is a cracking player.
