Do you remember a year ago almost to the day, they couldn't give oil away (intact I think it had negative value) and fuel prices were 99,9p for diesel.... well that didnt last £1.37 today and thats probably less than in other places... I suppose they had to start to recoup money somehow... So question... does anyone drive electric, or hybrid, or even self charging... best suggestions, or is the best suggestion to wait until further advancements in regard of charging points, reliability and range... Anyone who has one what are your cost comparisons...
Bought a nearly new car last year. Looked at all the options. Electric, too expensive, range not good enough for the current charging infrastucture. Hybrid, technically complex, plenty to go wrong, don't see the point really. Ended up with conventional petrol car. I fully expect to go electric next time though in 7/8 years time.
I have a hybrid, the electric range is a claimed 34miles but the max I've ever seen is 21, if you only drive local and can have a charge point at home then they may be ok. But if you drive a fair bit then the diesel equivalent of the same Car is still better value. I purely have mine as it's a company car and the BIK benefits having a hybrid brings. Few real world numbers for you from the current BMW hybrid and the exact same model BMW it replaced but a diesel Hybrid 530e - average MPG = 31.6 and approx miles per tank of petrol = 280-300miles 520d it replaced - average MPG ( from memory ) 51 and approx miles to a tank of diesel = 600/630 Charge time from empty from my home charger approx 4/5hrs If it's a company car and your not funding it all yourself then the BIK benefits are worth it without question, if your buying and running yourself and do any real amount of miles then I'd still go for the diesel equivalent
The range of a decent electric car now is around 100 miles, maybe more in favourable conditions. Think about how many times you exceed 100 miles in one journey, or even one day, that’s the formula to decide whether it’s the car for you. If you do more miles than that a handful of times a year, you could hire a petrol car for those journeys and save money because running costs for a battery electric are a fraction of petrol. Electric cars are relatively simple vehicles so are less likely to go wrong. The batteries will last at least 7-8 years. I’m told the Peugeot 208 equivalent is the best electric on the market. Hybrids seem to be a waste of time, a way for manufacturers to repackage fossil fuel cars to appear green. I wouldn’t be keen on one.
Need to sort the infrastructure out. Match the convenience of driving into a petrol station and drive out minutes later able to drive another 800 miles. And be able to tow two tonnes. Don't really give a **** about speed, style or, within reason, cost but until they've sorted the basics out then we're heading up **** creek without a powerful enough, quick recharge paddle.
I've never seen any real world 'range' figures for electric cars that specifically cover driving at night with lights on, in summer/winter with AC/heater going full blast, with a full load of passengers and luggage.
Range is more like 250-300 miles for bigger cars and improving all the time. Infrastructure is increasing as is the tech to charge the cars. Most people’s average journey is 26 miles so for most people most of the time they are suitable. But not for all yet
300 miles range would be acceptable if, and only if, you then didn't have to wait for 8 ****ing hours before moving again. Average journey time is misleading. You can have an average journey time of 26 miles calculated from lots of short runs of a couple of miles and half a dozen runs of 400 miles. Conclusion? The car's ****ing useless to you.
Yeah, but how often will you be doing that? Having said that, I’ve just got a new two ton petrol car so perhaps I’m not a reliable witness!
Lets face it, an electric car will never be as convenient as a petrol or diesel car until technology and infrastructure You mean driving at night at different times in the year, or with passengers? Quite often actually!
Still old fashioned petrol for me, big V8 with a twin turbo. I only drive about 2000 miles a year so that’s how I justify it!
Dirty diesel for me but there again i do 35k per annum. Just think though when all the petrol and diesel cars are now longer available, how are the corrupt government going to tax us for all the lost revenue?
I think we will end up being tax'd per mile we drive, price dependent on where and what time etc. Bigger tax on new cars and obviously the company car drivers will be just hammered more and more as always
Tesla Model 3s aren’t bad mileage wise and the supercharger network is very good. I know a few early adopters that are 2-3 years into ownership. I’m considering one when I next change. I followed an old diesel Mondeo the other day. It was emitting more fumes than a fossil fuel powered power station.
