I know that there aren't many rugby supporters on here.....I may be wrong, but the entertainment in the Six Nations Tournament this year, can never be achieved in football! Fantastic stuff...hmmm except for the Italian games....right back to football! Masky’s todger for hire....charges by the inch....anyone?
Rugby? Yawn....... Watched some of it last night as nothing else on. Penalty. Penalty. Penalty. Penalty. Penalty. I thought Ayew was playing. I didn't have a clue what most were for and the commentators didn't explain. They probably didn't know either. Also shouldn't there be a time limit on advantage? If you haven't scored a try within, say, 60 seconds then advantage over?
Watched all the Wales games and highlights of the rest. Watched the whole game last night. Exciting stuff. France undone by exactly the same situation that undid Wales against them. Sealing off penalty then a try deep into the red. No doubt England are glad that Italy are still in the tournament.
The welsh media can now give it a rest. Why do people think if you’re welsh you must watch egg chasing
Ahh, the old Welsh/rugby debate again. It's mainly a follow on from the "Welsh person" historical steriotype viewed from those outside Wales. If you're Welsh you work down a pit, sing in a choir and watch/play rugby. I've never done any of those and funnily enough, still feel I'm Welsh. Mind you, I used to enjoy Ponty and Pop by the brilliant Gren in the echo. Arnold Nutstrampler the blindside mugger and Bromide Lil the barmaid at the Golden Dap were classics. I remember the musings of Pop coming down the valley on holiday to the "Fleshpots of Trecco"......
Not worked in a pit, though my grandfather did. Never sung in a choir (other than being forced to in school). Played a lot of rugby between 9 and 33 though. Gren was classic. Had a few calendars and a book of his cartoons. Been to Trecco a few times as well. I have adopted another stereotype with the sheep though.
Gren used to have plenty of sheep in his cartoons with printed messages written on them. Then of course there was always his regular favourite - Nigel the sheep, resident of Aberflyarff in the Scrumcap Valley.
Enjoyed reading the strip cartoon in the Football Echo back in the 70’s. Clever as was that film Grand Slam
Died in 2007. https://www.grencartoons.com/ Just reading that he was a founding member of the Barron Knights. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gren
Yep. Saw that sad event back in the day - a great loss to simple humour based upon knowledge of his environment. It wasn't just the subject of Gren's cartoon strips that made me laugh. Very often it was the messages on the sheep and the backgound scenes that were hilarious. You had to look beyond the conversations at the environment he created as a vehicle for the message. Walking through Aberflyarff town, as well as sheep for company, Ponty and Pop usually had shop fronts in the background. I remember one in particular selling Lingerie - the owner's name over the door was Norma Stitz.....
Comedy is often multi layered. The obvious topic then the deeper slightly hidden topics. You always needed a couple looks at his cartoons. Some of it was topical, the rest stood the test of time. A keen eye, a sharp mind and, as you say, an appreciation of his surroundings and audience.
On a quiet Sunday with no City performance to moan about , just been looking back over some old Gren stuff. Nigel and Neville were of course the message bearing woolley Aberflyarff residents in Scrumcap Valley situated on the River Efflew.... Bromide Lil the tattooed barmaid pulling a pint at the Golden Dap - I wouldn't let her pull anything else...... Arnold Nutstrampler and Atilla Groinstomper - how the feck did he come up with such names for those characters..... Just typifies the rugby coach's instructions - if you go down in a ruck, always check them out when you get up...
I can think of worse things to be doing. Bromide Lil, forgotten about her. Im sure she used to work in the Llwyncelyn Hotel in Porth in the early 80s. As for coaching, plenty of blind side mugging in the 70s and 80s. And as for the dark arts of the front row.
I had a book with loads of the Ponty n Pop strip cartoons in it - probably in the attic with all my old City programmes - one of the sheep had the old chestnut “Jesus saves but Toshack scores from the rebound!” ps Ciaron Brown’s on the box for NI; Gavin Whyte’s on the bench
