York City bring in Sunderland midfielder Adam Reed York City have signed Sunderland midfielder Adam Reed on a one-month loan deal. The 21-year-old, who is yet to make his competitive appearance for the Black Cats, had a loan spell with League One side Portsmouth earlier this seasons. And last term he spent time with Bradford City and Leyton Orient. The Minstermen are currently in the relegation zone in League Two, two points adrift of the clubs immediately above them with six matches to play. Meanwhile, York have released 19-year-old defender Jameel Ible.
Jonathan Miles: Dagenham sign Tottenham keeper on loan League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge have completed the loan signing of Tottenham goalkeeper Jonathan Miles. The 19-year-old, who turns 20 on Good Friday, had a spell at Brentwood Town earlier this season and joins the Daggers until the end of the campaign. Dagenham interim manager Wayne Burnett told the club website: "We know Spurs rate him very highly. "We've had to bring him as we don't believe Chris Lewington will be available for selection." Lewington, who has made 44 appearances for the east London side this season, is a doubt for the matches over the Easter weekend after he picked up a knock in the 2-1 defeat by Fleetwood last Saturday. Miles joined Tottenham at the age of eight and has featured for their Under-21 side this season.
A chat with the gaffer Although Saturday’s postponement allowed a couple of players to gain a bit of extra fitness, the manager will now be without John-Joe O’Toole for the rearranged fixture. The midfielder’s loan spell runs out on April 2nd, so only has two more games with the Gas. John Said: “Sometimes the postponements help, sometimes they don’t. I think the previous ones helped us to re-galvanise the squad a recruit a little bit in January. “This one is different, it helped people like Joe Anyinsah and Fabian Broghammer to get fitter, but we will probably lose John-Joe O’Toole for the rearranged game. “We have two more games with John-Joe, he has done really well and I am sure the home crowd will give him a good send off on Saturday, and I am sure he will want to do well for us. “We knew on Thursday night that it was a big doubt, so we were able to get a training session in on Friday morning, and it saved us and the supporters travelling.” After a hectic period the extra rest may have done the team good as they now head into another busy month until the end of the season. John said: “We have just been through a very hectic period, and if you can get on a good run, which we have done, it gives people a lift. “If we can get a good start over the Easter weekend we will deal with whatever comes up. The players are happy playing, you just hope you don’t get too many injuries and problems. “Everyone is raring to go for the final push, and we know where we stand. If we can be successful no one minds playing so many games.” And the manager has an affinity with this weekend’s opposition, but he will be putting his personal feelings to one side until after the game. He said: “I scored my first league goal against York many years ago and I had my first managerial job at York so there is an affinity there. “But come Saturday I have to try and put a team out to beat them, and then hope they stay up. “I have allegiances here and I have to make sure Bristol Rovers are in good shape. But I would be sad to see them in trouble, and I hope they can survive it.” Joe and Fabian are both back fit, and Oli Norburn could be back in contention for the weekend if he continues to make progress. The manager is also having to hold back Matt Harrold, who is raring to make a come back following his ACL injury. John said: “Joe and Fabian would have both been in the squad for Saturday, but it doesn’t hurt them to have a little bit of extra time to get their strength back, so they will be ok. “Oli Norburn wouldn’t have been fit for the Bradford game, but if he can improve well this week, we will see if we have a chance for next week. “Matt Harrold just wants to get back out there, he is knocking on the door, and he just wants to join in. “We have got right to the last stages with him and he is in great shape and is an excellent professional. We have to be spot on with him, because the last thing we want is for him to break down. “We are looking after an enthusiastic footballer, which is great, but care and consideration come first. He has a great attitude, and it rubs off on other people. “He is in the dressing room at every home game and he is out on the training ground when he can, and he is a big presence around the place and his attitude rubs off on some of the younger players we have.” And tomorrow night Rovers will be fielding a strong squad in the GFA Senior Challenge Cup game against Yate. John said: “I have some pros that need a game, people like Clayton McDonald and Oumare Tounkara, they need games and we haven’t been able to give them too many 90 minutes. “I am close to getting a squad of professionals for the game, as they need to play football. We have to get people in good shape.”

JW - WE ARE CHOMPING AT THE BIT Manager on Saturday's game John Ward and his players are looking forward to getting back to action this weekend when York City visit the Memorial Stadium. The team got a break last weekend when the trip to Bradford City was called off, but now they head into another busy period of games. The manager said: “The players are fine with the Easter games, it is a time for supporters to go and get games, and it allows people to have their weekend holiday period with a bit of sport thrown in. “We are chomping at the bit a little bit to get a game in because we missed a game last Saturday, and the players are keen to play. “The break has been welcome; the games were coming thick and fast. “We didn’t grumble as we were getting decent results, but we have now got 30 days with another seven games in and we have to get them in thick and fast, so at least we have had some practice.” John began his managerial career at York and has fond memories of his time there, but his focus is on getting his team ready for another big game. He said: “I look back fondly at my time at York, as it was my first managerial job and a really big experience. It was good to get the experience. “I left York City to come to Bristol Rovers, so there is a link all the way through. “It is a huge game for them, and if we go into the game thinking we have won four home games in a row which has been lovely, if we get complacent, we will get sorted out, and that is something we don’t want to happen. “We better be in the right frame of mind, as the game is very important to us, as it is to York City.” The break has given a few players the opportunity to get back to full fitness. John said: “I have some people back available, we had the game in the Gloucester Cup in midweek and Fabian Broghammer got himself a good hour and Oumare Tounkara got 70+ minutes, which he hasn’t had in a while. “Joe Anyinsah is back fit and available, so we have people in good shape. “I haven’t seen some of those players play before, and it was a proper competitive game. It was all about attitude from our team. “It was a good mix of young and senior players, and each and every one of them showed the right spirit, attitude and approach to the game. “If and when I need to put them in and around the first team, I know that is what I am going to get, and I am really pleased with that.” And John-Joe O’Toole plays his last two games for the club this weekend, and the manager admits that he would like him back. “He has got another year contract at Colchester at the moment, and it won’t have gone unnoticed how well he has done for us “I am like all supporters, and would like to see him back, but I cannot make any guarantees and neither can John-Joe. “John-Joe has enjoyed it here, he knew he was going to play, and he has taken the bull by the horns and shown that he wants to be part of what is going on.” And after the home game against York, Rovers travel to Dagenham on Easter Monday with the aim of climbing as high up the table as possible. John said: “Dagenham will be a test, they are all tests. “You could look at the fixtures we have left and say we have people in the bottom part of the division – but people have played us when we have been in the bottom part of the division and found us a tough prospect. “All these games are tests for every player. If even one of players think we have cracked it and we are ok then he becomes the weakest person around the group. “I want to finish top half of the table, I don’t want to be just looking at one more win. We need to be trying to finish as high as we can, these games are all very big for us.” And the manager admitted he has been turned down by a couple of players in the lead up to the loan window closing. He said: “I have tried; I was turned down on a couple players yesterday who I tried to get in to bolster the squad. “I am still having a little look today but probably without as much enthusiasm. We have a couple of players back, and we should have Oli Norburn back next weekend for the final five games. “So if I cannot bring in a new face today then I am not going to lose sleep over it. We will crack on and try and do the best we can with the group we have, because it is a good group.”
YORK MATCH PREVIEW A look ahead to Saturday's game This weekend Bristol Rovers entertain Nigel Worthington’s relegation threatened York City team. When Rovers lost their away game 4-1 at Bootham Crescent ground on 15 December they had recorded 4 victories from 22 starts and 12 defeats, it spelt the end of Mark McGhee’s time in the Managerial seat. Since John Ward took over, in 17 games there have been 10 wins and just 4 defeats. A remarkable turnaround. Having won the Blue Square League Promotion Play-Off Final last season, York City have struggled as the season has worn on to get to grips with football at the higher level. Although they started the season well, the Minstermen’s form has slumped since the turn of the year and they have picked up just 7 points from the last 15 games, just a 16% return. In fact, their last victory was a 3-0 defeat of high flying Burton Albion on New Year’s Day. On Saturday they found themselves in even deeper trouble after going down to a 2-1 defeat at fellow cellar dwellers Torquay United’s Plainmoor. On just 6 minutes, the Gull’s Elliot Benyon pounced on the ball and forced it home after Lee Mansell's corner was not cleared to give the home team an early lead. On 23 minutes Ryan Jarvis went from the edge of his own penalty area to the opposite end and unleashed a right-foot rocket to put the Devon team 2-0 up. It was 20 minutes from the end that a Tom Cruise foul on Josh Carson gave Richard Cresswell a penalty strike, to bring the score back to 2-1 and resulted in a red card. Despite facing 10 men City were unable to press their advantage. Talking after the game City Boss Nigel Worthington said, "The game is 90 minutes long, it's not 20, and you cannot give the opposition a two-goal start because it’s tough going getting back into it, but I think they showed a lot of spirit. "They passed the ball a lot better today than what we have done, which I was very pleased with, but we need more conviction around the opposition's goal. I probably think that maybe a little of the self-belief and the confidence is being jolted a little, so it's just about being brave and taking the responsibility on and making it happen." Looking at the history of games between Rovers and York the record of matches between the clubs is pretty even overall, with plenty of away wins; so home advantage is not all it usually is. Meetings between Rovers and the Minstermen didn’t start until 1965-66 season as York were either in Division 3 North or the 4th Division up until then apart from 1959-60 season when they had one year in Division 3 (and Rovers were still in Division 2). That first meeting between the clubs was worth the wait, it was a real stunner. After 15 minutes of the Bootham Crescent game on 10th September 1965 York keeper Tommy Forgan suffered a broken finger and had to leave the game. Right back Alan Baker took over goal keeping duties and he performed brilliantly at times. Once Alfie Biggs had opened his season’s account in the 35th minute there was only going to be one winner. Terry Oldfield and Harold Jarman added goals that would have beaten any keeper. York fought hard and in-form centre forward Paul Aimson pulled one back but two goals in two minutes by Alex Munro and Harold Jarman gave Rovers a 5-1 victory. The return game at Eastville on 26th February was tremendously disappointing for Rovers. In a real mud bath Tommy Forgan stopped good efforts by Alfie Biggs and John Brown. Andy Provan for York could have secured a hat trick with better finishing, but the game ended 0-0. York went straight down that season finishing bottom by five points and conceding 106 goals. It wasn’t until 1971-72 that the teams met again. After a dull 0-0 result at York the Eastville game on 16th October was a real nail biter. A Harold Jarman hat trick and a Kenny Stephens double saw Rovers come in with a 5-4 win. That result is by far the highest score in these matches. On 12 March 1986 Rovers went down to a 4-0 defeat at Bootham Crescent, but just over two years later on 15 April 1988 turned the tables with a 4-0 victory. Rovers’ last home game against York was on 27 March 2004 when they ran out 3-0 winners. Rovers’ record at home to York reads Played 19, Won 8, Drawn 5, Lost 6. In a bid to stave off the threat of relegation Worthington has called on the services of fellow Irishman Martin O’Neill, just up the road at Sunderland to take the 21 year old midfielder Adam Reed on loan until the end of the season. Reed, who recently returned from a loan spell at struggling Portsmouth, has been told he will not be given a new contract when his present deal runs out in the summer. Worthington commented, “He is very good on the ball, has good energy and can put his foot in. He’s got decent league experience and the reports I have had tell me he did exceptionally well for Portsmouth. Their manager has told me he did a fantastic job for them so hopefully he can come in and do the same for us. He just wants to play football and has an enthusiasm for the game.” City director Sophie Hicks speaking ahead of this weekend’s game said, “What we need is that one win. That can kick-start everything, as it would break the cycle. In that respect, the second half at Torquay was encouraging. I thought we played very well and were unfortunate not to get a draw. “We remain very confident. Everyone is working very, very hard to make sure we stay in League Two. Every game is absolutely crucial. Everyone – from the players to the manager to the office staff and the board – are giving absolutely everything to make sure we stay in the Football League. "We worked so hard over eight years to get back into the Football League and we can’t let that go to waste. We have got a great manager who we believe can take us forward. “We have six huge games coming up. We remain extremely positive. OK, you wake up sometimes in the middle of the night and start thinking, ‘What can I do to help us get out of this?’ But this is a very tight team. There is no disharmony and everyone is sticking together. That gives us a great chance. “So, too, do the signings Nigel has made. It isn’t easy to get players in at this stage of a season, but Nigel has, through his contacts and knowledge, managed to do so. We have brought quality players in over the past couple of weeks. "Richard Cresswell was a big addition, as was Josh Carson. We feel the squad is stronger for the presence of all these signings. And we feel more confident to have these players at the club.” Rovers will be anxious to continue their winning run at home, which extended to four consecutive games after the defeat of Rochdale. With a total of 7 games remaining there is a gap of just four points between Rovers and a top 10 finish, 3 points this weekend would go some way to making that position much more achievable.

if the game looks won by 60 mins, sub off o'toole so we can give clarke or goddard some game time in the middle and this would allow us to give o'toole a good send off
A poor game...but another point. Lots of teams would like to play poorly and still pick up a point! Good things (won't take long!) *Anyinsah worked his socks off...could have been MoM *Mildenhall pulled off a stupendous save towards the end:top left(his) corner *Broghammer brought a spark when he came on *Smith consistent *three youngsters signed up to the U18s at half-time As Ward said, no-one hid, no lack of effort or commitment - just lack of quality today. *7,000 + attendance
