Early indications arising on what Bristol City need to do in the January transfer market
Robins may need to strengthen in these areas in January

It's only a quarter of the way through the season but it often pays in football to be organised.

And City's scouts will have been out watching transfer targets across the international break and before compiling reports for the next transfer window.

What shouldn't be in doubt is that Bristol City are able to bring in new players if they need to in January.

The Robins sold players worth - to our estimation - some £23m in total. That would include a £10m fee for Bobby Reid, £7m for Aden Flint and £6m for Joe Bryan.

The fee for Gustav Engvall - according to our sources - was risible.

The Robins meanwhile spent on deals totalling around £16m in committed outlays. They included a reported £5m fee for Adam Webster, £3m for Andreas Weimann, an estimated £1m for Marley Watkins and some £1.5m on Mo Eisa.

There should therefore be room for manoeuvre in January.

    New midfielder
And by our estimation a new central midfielder must be top of Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson's wish list.

Korey Smith will likely be out until the spring and by then the key Josh Brownhill and Marlon Pack could be run ragged.

Liam Walsh has not been given a minute of Championship time in a clear indication that more development may be needed yet before the former Everton midfielder will be called upon regularly to fill in when the current middle pairing is rested.

Johnson said that a loan to League One would have been ideal this season for Walsh and that may yet happen, while Joe Morrell is another in need of first team football.

The Robins were heavily linked to Newcastle United's Isaac Hayden and Sporting Lisbon's Ryan Gauld towards the end of the summer window.

    Further reinforcements

Elsewhere it may be that how the Robins' forwards fare in the next two months dictates as to whether a new attacker is sought.

Ideally another goal-scorer from beyond the front line would be found too though the Robins may already that within their ranks.

Indeed, Shawn McCoulsky and Freddie Hinds were watched over by Bristol City's coaching staff this week - against Crystal Palace U23s - to see how they have developed recently. The head coach has suggested previously that budget would not allow the recruitment of another forward, which may mean some wheeling and dealing would be needed.

Defensively, the squad looks well balanced however although it must be remembered that 'club-developed players' must be retained and one fielded in every match day squad.

That would limit further outgoing loans of players such as Morrell or goalkeeper Max O'Leary, although the young Robins must look to play at some point.

Finally, the club may return for a longer term target such as Colombus Crew goalkeeper Zach Steffen.

well obviously they have to do the reports after they have seen them play!
    did Maggs go for free?

ADD IN agents fee's etc and there wont much cash left to pay out much total spent probably around £14-15m on selling and buying, plus a percentage will need to go running costs etc probably about £4m to spend!

the rest is old hat, just repeating what has been said before... mutton dressed up as lamb!
but well done wiz for posting it... gives us something to chew on till the season restarts for the third time ………………..

My point exactly, and my read is that we won't make moves under any circumstances and our previous history shows us that we are remarkable at seeing our needs but useless at dealing or rectifying with them.
