Anyone have any experience of Van Mildert College at Durham? The daughter's been offered a place there so just wondering.
I once, many years ago, looked after the Officer Training Cadre from Durham and other NEast Uni's; Mildert had a good name, both academically and socially. I remember 'living-in' as being very popular and believe it still is. Buildings are ugly, but huge inside and, when visited through work, not too shoddy. Definitely worth a visit as it is a cracking location. If you don"t know the area and need more info give me a shout and I'll do what I can to help.
Don't know the University, but Durhams a nice place itself Might be worth going up there for a weekend to check it out? From my experience with daughters at Uni I'd say it's close enough to visit with a couple of hours drive, but just far enough away so they can't keep popping home! No direct trains I don't think, but that shouldn't be a massive issue
One of my sisters mates had the pick of either Durham or Oxford/Cambridge (forget which one) He got the grades for acceptance to both and chose Durham. Just felt it was more in tune with his background.
My daughter is at Brighton university and still turns up ..these grants don't half go a long way or is it my cash which funds it
Thanks for this. We went to an open day there last year but we didn't see that particular college. It is a nice place though and it's actually 4 hours from where we live so she won't be bringing her laundry round and she won't be getting too many visits!
I went up there for an open day about 20 years ago. Seemed nice enough. I wanted to go to Collingwood or Grey (nice historic looking buildings) but was offered Van Mildert (1950s concrete blob). Triple jumper Jonathan Edwards went there and seemed to enjoy it. Anyway, I was put out while I was there by stories of favouritism towards Oxbridge rejects when it came to College choice, which didn't sit well with me (whether true or not). It was enough at the time to persuade me to go somewhere else
I took my daughter to look around Nottingham, Sheffield, Lincoln and Leeds then she came home the other week from school and said she wanted to go to York st john so she has sorted her accommodation and starts in September.
If 'Oxbridge' is/are reckoned to be tops, then Durham must be very close behind (or even above, depending on point-of-view)
It is certainly right up there. It depends totally on what you are studying. UMIST is supposed to be very good. Imperial, London School of Economics, Warwick, University College London, Loughborough, Hull University is also supposed to be really good.
