Did anyone see the documentary last night about Andrew McAuley, the Aussie adventurer? He decided he was going to be the first person to paddle the 1000 miles from Australia to New Zealand by kayak. Despite being told that it was virtually impossible due to the treacherous seas, he first set out in December 2006 but had to give up on the 2nd day due to hypothermia. The onboard camera shows him bawling his eyes out "I'm never going to see my boy again. I'm never going to see my wife again", over and over before he even left the bay in Tasmania. Instead of taking the hint like a sensible person, he decides to take another stab at it a few weeks later. This time he manages to make it to within about 30 miles of New Zealand, but he capsizes. He manages to fire off a mayday message, but it's very garbled and the coastguard isn't even sure that it's him. In any case, they don't manage to find his kayak till a couple of days later and his body is never found. The whole thing was suicidal from the outset, and he's just a selfish **** for doing that to his wife and kid.
I wonder of the wife knew what was going to happen and just kept egging him on to get rid of him - she gets the house without having to give him any access to the child. Seems a pretty clever move to me.
