Tonight's game got me trying to remember our most forgettable games. Watford away last season sprang to mind. Of course there were the Sousa and Hart years.
1987 home to Everton. Only one decent shot. Won 1 - 0, Martin Allen scored. Turned up without a ticket, managed to get one from a tout (for face value!) and found myself sitting next to Jack Buckner, David Moorcroft and Des Lynam (it was a Wednesday night - the day off in the middle of the World Athletic Championships and the three were working as the studio panel on the BBC.) Des agreed it was one of the most boring matches he had ever seen and he had seen quite a few as a Brighton supporter.
Brighton at home last year. One of the few games I got up to, and the banter between the Brighton mob above me and a lone 'boy-band' lookalike R's fan was more entertaining. Even meeting DT at halftime was a welcome diversion!
There was a watford home game about 6-8 years ago that had less chances than the SC semi. Theres was literally nothing, it was almost like it was a fixed match and we both needed a point to stay up or get promoted.
Could have named about anyone of 70-80% of our games last season but I was just about to say that same game. I was sitting in W12- think it was between Xmas an new year and it was fecking freezing. Was pre Fernandes era and Bernie and Flavio had no intention of putting their hand in their pocket any more. Ecclestone was sitting a few rows in the C-Club section with a blanket on his lap- freezing his bollox off and looking bored out of his mind. I remember thinking what an idiot he was- 80 year old billionaire sitting watching that sh*t!! Will never understand why he invested in the club but then didn’t bother spending proper cash and making it interesting.
Port Vale at home, lost 1-0, that tactical genius Stewart Houston in charge. I kept thinking to myself, 'what the f&ck am I doing here?!'
I would like to nominate the last home game of the season against Plymouth some 7-8 years ago, think it was the last game Ainsworth was in charge.....Now I hadn't been to a game for a good few years but we were in London for the day, so Mrs TR said why don't you go to the match whilst I go to Westfield for the afternoon, great idea I thought.....hadn't reckoned on what a bloody awful side we were in those days and was bored witless by a 0-0 draw......
That game where Paul Hart finished with seven defenders on the pitch to preserve a 1-0 lead OR the New Years Day trip to Narwich a couple of years back when Barton got sent off and Leon Clarke didn't give a toss
I believe it was a 2-1 lead against Bristol city. That wasn't boring as it was three goals and its not often the whole crowd boos the manager after a win!
I was at that game, it was dire....but I think the following season was a 0-0 against them - I took a pal who follows Rugby League and he reckoned it was 90 minutes of his life totally wasted!
