I'm off to Dublin for a weekend in April and of all the places I have been, I have never visited the Emerald Isle, so, those that have visited Dublin whats not to be missed while I'm there? I hope there all like this bloke because I don't want my illusions spoilt.. http://tyronetribulations.com/2014/...dug-tunnel-from-bedroom-to-pub-over-15-years/
I've never but my wife went recently for work and said its great there but expensive. She said to go to Temple Bar it's Dublins culture centre. Dublin gets bigger and bigger because it keeps Dublin
Visit the council house estate called Finglas, not too far from the airport. Lovely place, it makes Bristol's council estates look like Millionaire's Row.
I'm off to Rome in April, I can't wait as I've never been there but what Shiny said about the place last year made me want to go, so was well chuffed when I opened my Christmas pressie this year.
Went there on my daughters 21st celebrations and did bars and restaurants, none that stand out or I can remember. Also went with mates on a cycling tour. One night we ended up in Johnnie Fox's in the mountains outside, don't ask me how we got there. Brilliant night there, reminded me of the old Hoffenbraus (spelling?) near the old Top Rank. Be careful the locals don't like the English, well not our lot anyway.
RODney I found Rome, or the streets I walked, to be dirty and if you cross the road you only cross with 50 others. The car drivers are nuts. Their underground was also filthy. That was 10 years ago, Shiny might well be right now.
Been a couple of times. The pubs are nice - London-like. Didn't meet any hostility - maybe that's a myth? Dunno. Expensive - and rainy. If you like history, the book of Kells is interesting in Dublin college. Temple Bar is the pub district - loads of live music. Verdict: fun but wet cold expensive and over-rated. A good piss-up but so is Bath.
Sorry forgot - a visit to the Guinness factory is fun. If you allow all day you can get hammered courtesy of the numerous yanks who want to learn to pour a pint but not drink it!
Been there lots of times. Always stayed on the North side of the river by the Custom House. Can highly recommend Temple Bar and adjacent areas for great pubs. If you like history there's plenty on offer. O'Connell street is the main shopping area - or used to be. If you feel adventurous get a train out to Howth (Head) which is on the coast. Beautiful place and there's a great bar called the Waterside. Phil Lynott is buried there although it's outside of the town in a huge cemetery. I took us over an hour to find his grave ! Skerries is also nice and isn't too far away by train.
Been quite a few times with work, stayed near O'Connell street north of the river, pubs good and no problems, even got a lock in. Temple bar as others have said the tourist party area. From memory about 5 euro a pint. taxi ride from airport about 30 euros, although there is also a good bus service. One taxi driver did warn me not to venture to far north of O'Connell street at night but never had a problem and always found people interesting and friendly
Do one of the bus tours round the city - our driver did a running commentary and was very funny Also try the Brazen Head - Ireland's oldest pub http://www.brazenhead.com/
Thanks guys, seems like my type of place, beer and history, (I do like a bit if history) I walked in to a train carriage once when Phil Lynott was shagging Leslie Crowthers daughter! true story.!
'Do one of the bus tours round the city - our driver did a running commentary and was very funny' Spot on. Our driver was commenting as we went past a cemetery where a famous crossword compiler is buried. Cemetery was well looked after in pristine rows. The driver told us if we looked carefully we would see the compiler's headstone. Buried in 3 down, 4 across. Well, it made me laugh.
if you drive, beware of buses between 7 and 10, 5 and 7 o' clock they seem to go everywhere and they mostly don't like " foreign drivers" the Murphy's is better than the guiness, in Cork I had 16 pints one night, taxi home, well hostel, then up next day at 6 to drive a further 60 miles south !
Lovely city if you like your history there's an old prison that's a good visit just wish left brother in there when he was locked up
