Alan Pardew faces a difficult decision next weekend in whether to stick by Ryan Taylor or to drop him in favour of Santon.

It has to be said that Taylor has done very well so far this season despite having an off day at Manchester City last Saturday. He has scored some vital goals and seems to have developed a good understanding with Jonas. Dropping him now would seem very harsh and sometimes it is better for players to know that the manager still has faith in them after they have had a poor game. Having said this, Santon is an excellent young player with great potential and must be desperate to be given a place in the starting line up.

There is also a case that can be argued that Jonas has to sacrifice the attacking side of his game so that he can give Taylor additional support and protection, and Santon's willingness to get forward on the overlap would make us more dangerous going forward.

So if you were Alan pardew what would you do?

  2. Keep him in.

He's better than Simmo, and Simmo wants to leave anyway, I'd rather have someone that's happy where he is.

Raylor stays, Santon comes on in for Simmo.

Keep him in, it was one bad game, he's been great all season.

Pardew will not drop Raylor (nor should he) after the match he said he has been a hero for us this season, so will certainly not drop him next match. Lee Ryder also said yesterday that Santon is putting pressure on Simpson not Raylor for their place.

Difficult one. The short term view would be to put Santon in and drop Raylor. But I hope Pardew keeps the faith and backs his player. In the long run he'll benefit from doing so. Not only with Raylor, but all the players appreciate this kind of thing. Footballers are a bit soft and like to be told how great they are, know they have their managers backing. I think he has done too well to be dropped overall and would be disappointed. there will be better games to introduce Santon, and we'll need with the busy fixtures ahead.

I understand the argument about Jonas but I really don't think it matters as long as we get the results. If Jonas has to sacrifice a little bit for the success of the team, that should always come first. And I think Jonas has been better in the attacking third this season anyway. Santon also seems to have come to us with a few niggles (hence the price) so the longer and slower we take it with him the better. Of course at some stage you have to play him, not worry about injuries, but I can't see the rush. Raylor will be desperate to put right what happened last week and he has bounced back once already this season. Long term I hope we sign a natural left back, I see Santon replacing Simpson. Its a baptism of fire chucking Santon in against one of the top two teams in the land, away from home.

Dropping him would ruin his confidence. Patting him on the back and sending him out to prove a point should work wonders.

Cheeky bet on Taylor to get the first goal against Man U.

Keep him in and see how he gets on. If he has another poor game then I think we'll have to go with Santon for Chelsea.

Santon is playing with the reserves tonight. Not beyond the realms of possibility that a great performance could see him landed with a starting berth vs Man U

  13. Long term we need a new LB, but for now Raylor will do fine.

Raylor is a great squad player and great cover for LB/RB/RM/LM and even CM.

Still think Santons first start should be against someone who won't cause him much problems. Ease him into it/build confidence.

Don't drop him as he's played well for the vast majority of matches this season and he shouldn't be punished for 4 minutes of error strewn play vs Man City.

Santon was purchased to play in his best position which is right back. Raylor has been good this season and although he had one bad game I say keep him in.

The thing is if we drop him for santon at lb we aint achieving much. I say Santon comes in for Simmo and Raylor stays in the position till we get a lb in January.

Raylor knows that when we do sign a lb (its on the cards) he will be dropped and its up to him to compete with Santon for a first team place.

Simmo can go for all I care, every account seems to suggest hes thinking he deserves a better contract when in fact he is very replaceable.

Im sorry for the lad but football a harsh game.

Simmo out - Santon in. Raylor to stay for the manu game.

not having a go but why?
we aren't talking obertan who played what 3 games for manure all in the cup or even someone like sammy who's come up through the ranks this guy has played in a top league and played in huge games including the champions league.
I don't think he's not in the team through lack of confidence more likely pardew sees him as a RB and the one in the team is playing ok.

we didn't ease tiote in or cabaye for that matter
