I may have exaggerated the point because I was talking to Milk and he's shown how much he likes a exaggeration today <whistle>

That's precisely what you've been saying though. You've been saying £150k a week is no different than £350k a week because both are ending up rich. (Despite one being over twice the other).

The thing is, if there really were any worry than PSG would stunt his development, maybe I could see a point, but he'd be given the best opportunity there. 1st team, all the facilities and staff to get the best out of him, a highly professional team, champions league etc.

He's going to have much better chance of developing at PSG than he would going to United where he won't get top level European football, the coaching has been subpar, etc . Negative atmosphere, etc

He's getting better experience and more money at PSG than he would going to a midtable club in England.

I think there are 2 sides to this money argument and we've got a very clear divide. <whistle>

We're never going to agree on the money motivation aspect of this. We have different values maybe. I get the joke you threw in about utd but that aside, the PL provides a far better challenge than the other European leagues.

You assume that anyone who has a decent amount of money automatically craves more, this isn’t true. In the same way a working class guy might be happy with what he has and what he earns, a person viewed by many as being wealthy can feel exactly the same way. In fact it’s more likely, as being comfortable financially means that money isn’t as much as focus as it might be when you’re constantly worried about how you’re going to pay an unexpected bill.

Footballers end up with huge salaries due to their agents (who generally take 10-15% btw) who maximise their clients market value, partly due to self interest but mainly because that’s their purpose. Not all footballers love bling and the barmy excesses that their huge salaries can provide. To many, I’m sure, it’s just a nice by product of their chosen career. That said, there’s people who love money in all aspects of life and football is no different, but you can’t judge who they are without actually knowing them personally imo.

Still on the De Ligt money subject? <laugh>

Look at it this way. If you could make generations of your family. Your kids, your grand kids and your great grandkids comfortable for the rest of their lives, while playing a game you love, why the hell wouldn’t you do it? PSG will compete for the champions league next season - they’re not a Chinese super league team....

For those of you humble enough to say no to this, I applaud you......I assume you’ve never played the lottery and live in a commune!? <whistle>

De Ligt might have a career ending accident tomorrow - earn as much as you can, while you can. I can’t blame the lad.

Is Delight being offered triple the salary he would earn from any of the other big- name teams he could sign for?

I don't play the lottery, or indulge in any gambling game at all. Neither do I live in a commune.
People are different, and that's fine - what gets me is when people state that we would all do what they feel that they themselves would do. We're none of us in a position to say that.
I've only made about 4 job decisions in my life, and never once was the money the deciding factor in my decision. I've been self-employed now for 30 years, when I took that decision I knew I would never earn the same amount that I could have done staying in my former job. I made the decision consciously, because there were other factors that were more important to me.
Yes, there are times when I'm aware of some things I'm missing, but there are also things I have that I could never have had working for someone else.

    Like I said; I applaud you <applause>

My brother is not money orientated. He works to live. He was talented enough to easily run his own business and has had the opportunity to do so.....but he has always chosen to work 9-5 with minimal stress. If he needs a bit of extra cash, he does a little overtime but it’s the exception not the norm. His life is quite rich in many other ways than money.

    I prefer money <laugh>

Honestly I don't know what he has been offered... But I've seen figures on here people saying £350k at PSG or £150 elsewhere. If those numbers are true that's more than double but not triple. I'm not his agent though so I haven't a clue what he's offered.

And what are the alternatives? Man Utd, he'd do better at PSG. Barca/Real he'd be on bench to start not the first team. Italy? How's that any better than France?

You've hit the nail on the head here.

What's interesting is that without exception, those who are saying they think there's nothing wrong with going for the money are assuming that everyone would do it. While those who think it's not a good idea, accept that not everyone's the same. Funny that!

There is liking money and there is pure greed. There is also ****ting on your own career prospects to be greedy!

He'd learn far more at a mid-table PL than PSG btw but even I wouldn't choose that option! You want to learn but you want to be in with a chance of winning things too.

I guess it comes down to the options he has.

The bit that doesn't sit well with me is his comments about doing the best for his own development before (potentially) selling himself to the highest bidder.

He's not going to learn much playing against the other French teams imo.

I'm not normally one to jump on the mercenary thing either. I don't blame players for attempting to get as much money as they can from their short time in the game. I just don't like it when it's the deciding factor in their decision.

A true footballer should be in it for the love of the game, not the money.

PS... I say true footballer because some are in it purely for the money. The LB that played for Spurs springs to mind (shame his name doesn't) who openly admitted to not liking football and that he was only in it for the money. I spread honesty.

He's a 19 year old that could play for PSG for 350k a week and play with some of the best players in the world. ****ing hell what a guy!

Its perfect for his development. You reckon going to a mid table lump it long ****e PL club would be better? That's the trouble, people are blinded by the top 4 in this country. The rest of the league is ****e, just like France.

Couldn't disagree more. You're basically saying Celtic would be a good fit if they could afford top pay him £350k per week <doh>

I've not got anything against PSG either btw. It's just a **** league.
