I've been dreaming of it since the summer Thai. We've got a team that can beat anyone on our day and it would be nice if these boys could look back on this era and say we were the best ever Swansea team. Winning our first ever trophy (don't count the Welsh Cup or the Johnstones Paint Trophy) would be the best way of confirming this in the history books. Will be difficult though. To be honest I'd rather play Arsenal in the semis rather than Norwich/Villa or Leeds/Chelsea as Chelsea are looking like title winners and the other 3 play a style we don't cope with so well. I would fancy our attack against Arsenal's defence. Good luck, hope you stick it up Lambert. Have you ever won one of the big 3 trophies before?
League Cup twice - 1962 but that doesn't really count as we beat Rochdale in the final Teams did not take it seriously then either and again in 85 when we beat Sunderland 1-0. I went to that one, great day out and us Canaries and the Black Cats are good friends off the pitch since that day. We lost two other League Cup finals in the 70's, both 1-0 to Spurs and Villa. Payback for Spurs was this week, Villa payback due in December! Arsenal is an odd one. Their 1st team is not currently firing on all cylinders, hence we beat them with little possession a few weeks ago and would have thought you would do pretty well against them, as our midfield and forward line didn't really click for that game. If we get through I am not too bothered who we are drawn against, as long as we don't disgrace ourselves should we get knocked out - hence I want to avoid Chelsea!
Good point. I forgot it was 2 legs. Factoring that in, the best draw for us is Arsenal to overcome Chelsea in the other semi and we meet them in the final. Going to be tough though.
Jaysus, that's a glorious history in this comp you fellas have got! This is the first time we've even made the quarters!
Brad Jones - Regular starter Sterling - Regular starter Assaidi - Regular starter Coates - Regular starter Shelvey - Regular starter Allen - Regular starter So, it didn't flatter us at all. We thoroughley deserves to win 3-1, and from the chat I had with a few of the thouands of Pool fans there, flattery wasn't used once.
Coates isn't a regular starter. Assaidi has only been a sub in the league. Shelvey is used in rotation. Sterling came off the bench (Dai said that Liverpool started to play better when the big guns came off the bench - Suarez, Gerrard and Sterling). Jones and Allen were the regular starters, as I clearly stated. Both I and Dai agreed we were well worth our win.
sifting through all the bickering...and getting back on topic - there has been quite a lot of references made to the fact that this is the furthest the Swans have EVER got in the League Cup. All fair and accurate - but what is the furthest we have EVER gone in the FA Cup??? I was quite surprised, especially looking at the results that season! Check out the 1925/1926 season - same year my Grandfather was born........wonder how many people down the liberty saw that game live....any?!
Always was a good cup competition for us when it was a level playing field. This is our first QF for many years though (including the FA Cup). I did note this was Swans 1st QF appearance in this competition so well done for that achievement too Who knows, this current side may possibly emulate that of John Toshacks reign some years ago although it may not be a fair comparison as the game is so different now. I do have fond memories of watching the Swans in the top league before though, with Bob Latchford, Leighton Baines & Co terrorizing everyone Really was great to see
Price- We reached Semi Final of FA Cup in 1964 lost to Preston 2-1, In the quarter final we beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield which in my opinion was our greatest performance ever. Liverpool had a team of International players and won the 1st Division Championship that year whilst we were in the 2nd Division. We had to thank our goalie Noel Dwyer who was fantastic on the day and I have to say "I was there''.
Yep - well perhaps less well known is that we also reached the Semi-final in 1925/1926 - and beat a certain Arsenal in the QF!!! If you google it - you will find a site with all results for all teams in English leagues. Quite some run that year!
'spot on terr, some on here cant read or try to be clever......' very true dai, and well done to you for admitting it too
I posted a little bit of what I thought of our performance on the Liverpool board, on a thread titled "Season starts here" Season started in August mate. Rodgers hasn't prepared you very well is all. He brought in 2 centre midfielders (Allen & Sahin) when you already had Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard and Shelvey. He should have just bought Allen. He let Carroll go out on loan before signing a replacement. You should have had the choice between Suarez, Borini and Carroll for centre forward....Borini's injury wouldn't have been such a big deal then. He has destroyed Downing's confidence and is on the way to destroying Henderson's and Enrique's. It was obvious to all and sundry that instead of buying Sahin he should have been looking at either a winger or an attacking midfielder (2nd striker) and that you needed to sell either Carroll or Downing if he wanted another striker (Suarez playing on the right possibly). He got the balance wrong in this difficult run of games. There should have been more of a blend. He had to play a mostly second string last night because the firsts had played 2 games in 4 days....but he picks Allen and plays him the 90!? and then plays Gerrard and Suarez for 45 also. Will he expect these 3 to play against Anzhi as well as 2 league games next week? He is risking injuries. If you lose out in Russia your season will be on a knife edge already. Poor, poor management. We were excellent. Jazz Richards was my stand out at right-back! KI, Michu and Chico were immense also. The sad fact for you fellas is you finished the game with Suarez, Sterling, Gerrard, Shelvey and Allen on the pitch and came off second best against our reserves defence and goalie + Ashley Williams. You don't get enough bodies in the box (Is anyone playing AM?) and, apart from Suarez, don't have the guile and trickery to create good chances. Michu, Hernandez, De Guzman and Dyer were a lot more dangerous...a lot more. Good luck until we meet again in November, you are going to need it. So as you can see I disagree with Dai on Rodgers and his abilities and was chuffed with our performance, especially as we finished the game with 4 of our reserves in the back 5 against their "big guns" in attack and still created better chances. If we started a cup game with only 2 regulars from the League fixtures we would call it our second string wouldn't we. Nothing wrong with Dai being a realist. Besides the point though isn't it. I praised Dai's post because it was a fairly accurate assessment of the game in the face of several people mocking him personally and at least 1 asking him to leave the forum altogether for simply expressing his opinion. I do not think him describing Dragon's post as "Trollope" warranted that kind of response. (Dragon himself dismisses other people's views with similar language all of the time....there isn't a witch hunt to get him off here though is there?) I do not want to go into this further as Norway asked me not to. I suggest that you take back your accusation that I am "not a Swans fan" and engage your brain before you make such an accusation again. That too could be "the blue touch paper".
Good on you Dai, Good on you!................. Terror good to see you mentioned me in your post! Wouldn't have it any other way!.............................
Pete at the time I was a young child and we had a few lodgers in my Grandfathers guest house , they were in fact all the Swansea Town players who lived too far out of Swansea one I remember the most was a young lad Brian Evans ? Do you remember him he was dropped from the team for this game all I remember was he was terribly upset and my Grandfather consoling him.
Liverpool 1 Swansea City 3 End of Discussion, you only get one chance so who gives a flying **** who Brenda picked he fcuk ed up! Liverpool 1 Swansea 3 that's what it says in the record book
