How Sunderland duo Dan Neil and Callum Doyle fared for England's youth sides as Ross Stewart is left out of Scotland squad
Dan Neil played 79 minutes as England’s under-20s side claimed a convincing 3-1 victory against Germany at Colchester’s JobServe Community Stadium.

A crowd of 8,437 attended the match, as goals from Leeds striker Sam Greenwood (formerly of Sunderland), Manchester City’s James McAtee and Blackburn’s Tyrhys Dolan secured the win for Andy Edwards’ side.

Germany scored a late consolation goal two minutes from time when Lazar Samardzic's deflected free-kick beat England goalkeeper James Trafford.

Sunderland midfielder Neil came off the bench during a 2-0 defeat by Poland last week, but took his opportunity to impress against Germany.

The 20-year-old posted on Instagram after the match: “3-1 win to finish off a good away trip.”

Sunderland defender Callum Doyle, who is on loan from Manchester City, was also in action on Tuesday as England’s under-19s side beat Portugal 2-0 in a UEFA Under-19s Championship Qualification match.

Doyle, 18, played the full 90 minutes as two goals from Tottenham forward Dane Pharrell gave England the win in Chesterfield.

Elsewhere, Sunderland full-back Trai Hume made his senior debut for Northern Ireland in a friendly match against Hungary.
Hume came off the bench in the 83rd minute at Windsor Park as Ian Baraclough’s side were beaten 1-0.

Ross Stewart wasn’t named in the Scotland squad as Steve Clarke’s side drew 2-2 with Austria in a friendly match, while Bailey Wright was an unused substitute as Australia were beaten 1-0 by Saudi Arabia in a World Cup Qualifying match.

The worst thing about the last few years imo, is the way the way the majority if the young lads left for Premier league clubs.

The irony is a few would probably be regular starters now, thanks to our fall through the leagues but it is the fall that was a factor in them going!

He was one at the time who I thought was going as he has been told he isn't wanted or the money is needed. Clearly loved the club.

Alex Neil explains Dennis Cirkin's absence from this month's England U20 squad
Sunderland's Dennis Cirkin was named in the squad, but did not go away with the Young Lions

Alex Neil revealed that Dennis Cirkin stayed on Wearside rather than join up with the England U20 squad during the international break, with the blessing of Young Lions' boss Andy Edwards. Left-back Cirkin was named in the U20 squad along with his Sunderland teammate Dan Neil last month, ahead of the U20 Elite Programme games against Poland in Bielsko-Biala, and then against Germany at Chesterfield, but while Neil joined up with the squad as planned, coming on as a sub against Poland and then starting against Germany, there was no sign of Cirkin in either matchday squad.
Neil has now explained that Sunderland contacted the England set-up to ask that Cirkin be allowed to miss this round of fixtures, because the former Spurs man has started every one of Sunderland's games since the turn of the year.
"Dennis has done a lot recently" he said. "We liaised with Dennis and England, and they wanted to call him up, but we felt that it would be beneficial for him, given the remaining games, if he could maybe take a bit of a break off this one, and have a bit of a rest."
