http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/14763729.stm Stewart Downing believes Liverpool's expensive rebuilding programme has now put them firmly in the Premier League's title-chasing pack. Downing, with the England squad in Sofia for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria, has made an impressive contribution to Liverpool's unbeaten start after his £20m move from Aston Villa. Craig Bellamy was the last Liverpool arrival before the transfer window closed, joining Downing, Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates in Kenny Dalglish's revamped squad.
I think he's getting a little ahead of himself. We have a far better squad this year, but so do City, United and Chelsea. I think fourth would be good, higher would be great, First would be asking alot though! Although we are not in Europe which could help us out abit so you never know!
I hope by Christmas we are amongst the top 3 teams in the League, I don't know how Arsenal will perform now with their new signings. Spurs will be a huge game this month as well. I would love to shut their fickle fans up, they still bang on about them finishing above us with Arsenal. You go on their board and it's literally like Arsenal Hotspur United.
Can't fault him for having belief and if that is what Kenny is instilling in them then good stuff. That old saying shoot for the moon if you miss you are with the stars? Maybe aim for 1st, if you don't get it you will be right in the thick of 2-4. I like the optimism, remember this time last year? it was "steady the ship" "pair of safe hands" "Try, maybe, possibly get into champs league" "Torres can go to united" " It is OK to lose to the worst team in the prem"......yeesh Hodg podg was a nightmare.
Well if Chelsea are title challengers then we are, and according to John Terry and Fat Frank, they are all set to win it. Whats wrong with a little bit of belief?
I like Downing's belief and in the article he states what we all believe in as well, that when you are at Liverpool, top 4 is not really what you want, it is challenging for the title, challenging for the champions league, looking to win the FA cup, not just let's hope we can get top 4 because that is where we belong, we belong on the top that is the thinking that Kenny is spreading and so far it looks like it is getting through. It might not happen this year, but then again there is always......
I think that the mancs laughing at the "this is our year" phrase has but some fans off from saying openly that they think we can win it. F*** the mancs and everyone else. I'll believe until it's mathematically impossible and then I'll hope for a miracle.
I definetely think this is our year for a cup though, that is for sure, I really see us pushing for one of them, both of them would be nice and top four finish. Could you imagine everyone's face if we pulled a domestic treble!!!
Its important the players feel confident in the team's abilities aswell as their own, this statement is one where he believes the team can push for the title, despite the clear top four targets stated by the owner. Like Bill Shankly once said.. “A lot of football success is in the mind. You must believe you are the best and then make sure that you are." I'm sure KK echoed these words to the players, if they go around shouting that they compete, they must make sure they can.
Kenny tends to go with a ''One game at a time'' philosophy. There is none of this ''five year plan'' nonsense. The Liverpool way was always that the next game was the most important, in other words the next hurdle to overcome. Kenny will not look beyond the game against Stoke, thats the one he's planning for.
