Don't cry for me Argentina

MARCOS Angeleri hopes Argentine side Independiente will provide the escape route from his Sunderland misery.

The South American flop is expected to leave the Stadium of Light this summer after finally recovering from the knee ligament injury which has dogged his two years on Wearside.

Angeleri was close to returning to former club Estudiantes last summer, only for the move to fall through due to concerns over the 29-year-old’s fitness.

But Independiente could now offer Angleri the return to his homeland that he has longed for, with the Argentine international and his agent set to hold talks with the club this week.

Angeleri said: “Someone told my representative (of Independiente’s interest).

“I’m going to listen to Independiente.

“Today, my goal is to recover the regular football that I lost in England.

“Independiente is a big club and we will see what they propose.

“What I want is to play.”

Angeleri has endured a miserable time on Wearside since arriving in a £1.5million deal from Estudiantes in the summer of 2010.

Former boss Steve Bruce limited Angeleri to just three appearances before a recurrence of his knee problems saw him go under the knife twice last summer.

Although Angeleri has returned to full training under Martin O’Neill, the Black Cats boss accepts the defender’s wish to return to his homeland and will look to remove him from the wage bill, with a year still to run on his Sunderland contract.

“I have learned another culture, very different to my own, and another language,” said Angeleri.

“I also met a different type of football, more physical and dynamic. All these changes make you grow.

“However I didn’t get on with the previous manager and therefore hardly played.

“I had some dialogue with the new manager and told him of my desire to play regular football. But I don’t want to spend more time standing still, playing from time to time.

“I need to get back to playing regular football so it is very difficult to return there.”

Angeleri also insists that his fitness shouldn’t be a barrier towards any deal after suffering persistent knee problems since injuring it within weeks of his arrival during a pre-season clash with Benfica.

“I am well recovered,” added Angeleri, whose only Sunderland start came in the 2011 FA Cup third round defeat to Notts County. “I only need match fitness.”

 

Good luck to the lad it must of been an absolute nightmare for him and his family over the last two years. I hope he can get a club back home and get back to the player that he was before we signed him
