Fourteen years ago today, despite being in the Championship (or the First Division as it was known then) we were on the brink of signing David Ginola. please log in to view this image Link to pic: http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?id=HN.608019059787104668&pid=15.1 “David Ginola has been offered £2million a year to join Fulham. Club owner Mohamed Fayed has sanctioned the £40,000-a-week deal in the hope of luring the brilliant French playmaker from Spurs. Al Fayed has turned to Ginola after failing to land Liberian hitman George Weah. Ginola, 33, has just rejected a £3m move to Aston Villa but knows he has no future at Spurs. But Fulham's problem will be convincing Ginola to drop into the First Division. His extraordinary wage demands could also prove a stumbling block. Villa were stunned by talk of £60,000 a week and Everton lost interest as soon as they heard the going rate. Even Harrods owner Fayed is likely to be scared off by that sort of figure, which would have made Ginola the highest-paid player in Britain, let alone the First Division. But £40,000 a week is within his limit - and would still give Ginola a whopping £12,000-a-week rise.” In fact the 33 year old did in the end join Villa, for £3m.
£60,000 would have made him the highest player in Britain. Now that seems to be the standard wage for a first team player at a top half team. Crazy.
