I know Mr. Neil takes one game at a time But it seems to me that the next four, Will go a long way to maintaining our climb If we can keep defeat from the door With three of them away don´t expect four wins That would be a bonus indeed, 6 points in all, I´d take now, for two pins With Watford, the win that we need And after these comes the big ´Derby´ clash A six-pointer in more than one way, And if Ipswich are to suffer a wee crash We´ll need to win this, on the day But don´t be too greedy, this time of the year Not all games do hit quite as hard, Knowing just when to move into top gear Can make or break that final yard. Very good RBF. As ever you have hit the right tone and all we can do is wait and see now I guess. I am still unsure as to whether promotion would be a good thing this time around, but conversely, I still want us to win each game. I appreciate that those two sentiments counter each other, I am a true Canary.
THURNBY - I´m of the opinion that promotion is always good, but I do understand your point. One year up , even if that is all it amounts to, is still better imo, than consecutive years down here, which would inevitably mean losing some of our brightest lights.
It is a debate I have had on other threads recently RBF and the general consensus was that for this year, staying put was probably not the worst thing in the world. The basic argument being that we could not see this squad competing properly in the higher division and of course we would not be being beaten up several times a year by the various World X1's that sit there with huge budgets. Whatever happens we will never be truly comfortable higher up as we are a comparitively small club in the grand scheme of things, but another season of building would not be a disaster.
Not entirely sure that another season of ´building´ would ever make us any more competitve in the PL, best place to build, imo, is while you´re up there, slowly but surely.
In just the same way, I can find plenty to agree with in yours, I don´t think missing out this year would be an unmitigated disaster, by any means, I just don´t think staying here for too much longer would do us any good, that´s all.
I think the best way to "build" is to keep the nucleus of star players on which you "build" the team around - by that I mean Ruddy, Rusty, Bradders, Redmond, Hooper, Howson.... the best way to keep them is for them to play at the highest level, ie, the EPL. I don't agree with the sentiment "worse than death" (as per last year's relegation) so if we don't make it up this year it will be disappointing but not terminal, however, if we don't go up we may see a number of our leading lights leave in the summer if the promise of some EPL bench-warming comes along elsewhere.
It's quite a conundrum really. If we go up, unless we get lucky, we'll more likely than not be coming straight back down again (or we make a fantastic signing). If we fail to get promoted at the end of this season, I can certainly see Redmond and one or two others moving on and so make our task more difficult next season - we could even languish in the Championship for several seasons. If I had to chose, I'd just be in favour of getting promoted!!! Having said that, I don't think it would be such a disaster if we didn't make it.
