Never thought id say it, but i miss the days of old. The days when we had no money. It was so much much exciting signing players like jason jarrett and andy welsh when you had never once heard of them and wondering how they would do or what type of footballer they were. I prefered deadline day back then to, with the fear of selling your best player, like when Gareth Williams went to watford. It was just more fun. Even now we know when we want to sign someone, no one would just sign unexpectantly like Darron Kenton or someone which we didnt see coming and knew nothing of.

We are obviously in a better place now, but i actually just dont find it as fun. Being in administration was such a good feeling when we came out, and during it we seemed such a close knit group. I miss WANTING to come into money, and signing someone on the cheap and then them becoming great.

Did anyone else actually prefere it like that?

What you are saying is that you miss the surprise and lack of knowledge - days before the internet when your only source of info was newspapers and teletext.

I don't miss not having money - the fear that if you do manage to find a gem that he would bugger off to bigger things, the fear of administration etc.

This also plays a factor on football being less fun http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16528272.stm

Not really, I miss Nigel's first era, that was the best. we signed many players we had never heard of or players we knew very little about Lloyd Dyer, Michael Morrison, Lloyd Dyer, Tom Kennedy, Jack Hobbs.

yes that was the best- kennedy i got excited about as he sounded good. Hobbs i thought sounded awful but i knew nothing, morrison i ripped because of where he came from, dyer sounded exciting and a coup, but i didnt recall ever seeing him. Now its more like "yeah, he is an established great player for them, i hope he signs, if not, we will target this very good established player". just not as exciting!!!

Well, the MO'N era clearly stands out. Not a massive amount of money and signing gems like Izzet, Lennon, Guppy and Savage that made the best midfield this clubs ever had.

But followed by 8 years of signing complete and utter ****e like Carl Cort, Elvis Hammond and Momo Sylla.

Tough to say, but having money is very much preferable.

Having top players adds to the entertainment and knowing that we can fend off Premier League clubs is a great feeling.

So it depends on the manager and staff. Under MO'N, Pearson and Adams we enjoyed good football with a well knit squad/ But we had managers like Hollowhead, Megson, Taylor, Levein, Allen, Kelly ect. who had no money and did nothing with it and they were the most boring years of football i've ever had.

i dont miss the shipman days when we sold players like linnekar and mike newall just so the owners could restock their wine cellar.
like when they sold the houses in grasmere street which made it impossible to stay at filbo.
as in life having money is best

i was gutted when williams went, our only technically gifted player at the time. Yeates COULD have been so good, but just made no effort.

Standing on the terraces .... It's never been the same ... Kids off council estates being able to turn up on match day and afford the two bob , or a couple of quid to get in... ( like I use to ) the whole football experience is ****e to how it use to be , tough defenders who could tackle a man without that man falling down and rolling about like a fairy. British rail away day train specials ( I often sneaked on or cadged the fare in the train station on a Saturday morning )
The mid 60s to the mid 70s are my fav times .... Crowds of over 40,000 a couple of times as well..

I will never forget scrolling down page after page after page of deadline day transfers on ceefax and seeing we had signed a Mustapha Izzet on loan from Chelsea.

I said " who the f*** is that!!!!!".............the rest, they say is history :)

^ and thats what i miss, unheard of players signing who we know nothing about and dont know are being persused.

i do miss the fear of deadline day and if our star player will leave as well, and only able to unearth players on frees.
