Nothing to do with football but most of us must be concerned with the cost of petrol soaring!! George is having a laugh getting all this exrra revenue eh. What to do about it? Before you get out and about this weekend ask yourself one question, "Do you really need the car?" If not get the bike out or walk if your destination is not too far. Lets walk and cycle a lot more, then the garages will have unsold petrol and maybe have to reduce their prices to sell it. Use reverse psychoogy folks instead of reverting to the "panic buying."
I don't drive. I live right near my Uni campus and can pretty much walk everywhere, though I occasionally use the bus. Moving down to London after exams as well so I probably won't be driving there either. I plan on going as long as I possible can without needing to drive as I really hate how expensive it is, and also how damaging it can be to the environment.
Nothing beats cycling, in my book, if I'm going somewhere. If it's just for the pleasure then it's a tie with sailing.
It's a worthy sentiment, but only practical in this country for short distances. No-one is going to use public transport instead of their car nowadays.
All I can say is... Honda VFR800FiY. 110bhp. 55mpg. Super/Hypercar performance. OK, it's a sports tourer and not a sports bike. But it doesn't do 35-40mpg, at best, either. I've been doing this for about 3 years now. I've been a biker on/off for about 35 years, and now I'm mainly a rider of motorcycles, although I can call upon a car any time I really need one. It's my answer to petrol price increases and putting the fun back into getting from A to B. Actually, it was the fun aspect that made me come back, but the frugal consumption was a nice bonus. Seriously though, the Govt are onto a winner here. They want you to leave your cars at home, and if you don't they'll take your money. Why..? Because the British are too dependant on their cars. In Europe they own just as many cars, but as often as not, they leave them at home and take public transport. Or they ride motorcycles or bicycles. You don't have to do what I've done and buy one of the great motorcycles in order to get around. There are plenty of modern or retro scooters or small motorbikes on the market. And some of them sip fuel like they hate the taste, and still go faster than the traffic around them. Of course, even healthier is bicycling, and good luck if you do it. You'll be healthier, but you'll also be spending a lot more time on the road, perhaps longer than if you drove your car. My response to seeing all the people out there, with their herd mentality, is to shout baa-aa-aaa at them. Because not one of them has a single independent thought in their heads. They're all sheep.
As just said on Question Time they have to give 7 days notice for a strike. It won't happen for 'weeks' if it is to happen...
You are generalizing a lot there by saying that in Europe people are less dependant on their cars, but that's not the case. Yes in Nordic countries and also Holland,Belgium and Germany a lot of people don't use cars so much in other European countries they still use cars a lot.
I don't think you can better cycling up a country lane, with the perfumes of nature sighing on your skin.
Not saying they don't. But that doesn't discount the fact that in Europe they don't use the car as much as we do. By trying to pick holes and find the specific, you have missed my general point.
I do have a car, although I very rarely use it living and working in the center of Bristol. I use it mostly on weekends as I walk to work. If anyone lives within a 30 minute walk, they should ****ing walk. As of June however I will not be in Bristol, I will be back in Southampton unfortunately, and will have to drive a fair bit more.
Today was my worst day to date. I work in the Esso Petrol station in Bishops Waltham and had to serve people non stop for 10 hours on my own. Today is a day i will not get back so i think i should go to westminster and show them a piece of my mind.
Wow, feel sorry for you. I was behind an old lady in the post office having ago at the counter staff about the incoming price rise, so I expect you get some real misplaced moans.
I work in Barton Stacey just north of Winchester and being a small village, there's no train station, there are no buses from Basinsgtoke (unless I want to get a bus to Andover/Winchester and back again) and taxi would be far too expensive twice a day. So I have to drive to work. But around town, I tend to walk or get the bus. But these muppets topping up their tanks just 'in case there's a strike'!! Buy petrol as and when you normally do, there'll be a week's notice if they decide to strike and it'll be over easter when nobody's at work anyway!!!!
There's a Shell station at the corner of my road. Because of all the headless idiots who queued in all directions all day yesterday, even if I'd wanted or needed to drive somewhere, I'd have had to wait 1/2 an hour just to get out of my street. Absolute morons, I hope they all broke down on the way home. I despair for this country sometimes.
