All i keep seeing is everyone saying we need to buy a new striker. We have rumoured to have bid £10-12M for Troy Deeney, Islam Slimani keeps being linked by the media along with other strikers. IMO we don't need another striker as we already have Leonardo Ulloa, David Nugent, Jamie Vardy and Chris Wood giving us our main 4 strikers. If anything happens to them we then have Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Tom Hopper and even Jeff Schlupp. Is there really room for another striker now that Chris Wood is staying? Wood proven in his short cameo he has something to offer and IMO he is the most clinical striker in the squad (Not including Ulloa as we haven't seen enough of him) Vardy is very important to us because of his pace. David Nugent's experience will prove the be vital at times aswell so I don't see how we could fit in another striker We just paid 8M for Ulloa, Nugent and Vardy have both signed new deals and we turned down offers for Wood and announced he is staying. So no one is leaving now so why break the bank for Deeney or someone? Were best off leaving that money until January when we are half way through the season and we know which areas of the team need strengthening. By then we will know which players haven't been able to step up and they will need replacing so why waste the money?
There's 'need' and there's need. I don't think you need one to have a good crack at staying up- you seem pretty well stocked in the forward department. I'd definitely fear your side more if someone in the Deeney mould was recruited though. But then if you had two shiny new strikers it would be hard to justify not playing them. Which would mean giving Vardy&Nugent the could shoulder (assuming 442). I don't think that could be done in good faith given what they've contributed to the club- and it could unsettle the dressing room.
I agree with some of what you said. I think the best thing would to wait to January and If say Nugent can't cut it in the prem then look at signing someone like Deeney/Rhodes etc. to replace him Rather then stocking up on loads of strikers and having them just sitting around collecting their wages
I too think yours is a very astute post Grifter ... but as we've seen already injuries can play a big part and if Ulloa got injured how would I feel about Wood stepping straight in ... or relying on Vardy / Nugent ... frankly I would worry ... Chris Wood may yet mature into a very good centre-forward but right now he's a bit like a gangly youth on a first date ... hasn't got the physical presence needed ... which Ulloa has ... neither does Nuge and Vardy is a completely different player ... one that looks like he might thrive playing off Ulloa rather than instead of him ... For me the preference would be Slimani - pace, power and very good technique plus a big physical presence - for me a a better option than Deeney, particularly at the likely price versus £10 million for Deeney... personally I'm not a big fan of Jordan Rhodes ... not sure what he brings that Vardy doesn't have and does not have the physicality of Slimani / Deeney which I think we need to survive this season (particularly if Ulloa absent) ... we need to be able to mix it a bit (as it showed against Everton) because we are not going to boss possession in the way in which we did last season ...
Difficult to say. I don't think we need a striker as such, but I'd love to sign a goalscoring winger. Someone like Paul-Georges Ntep would be ideal.
Maybe you could do with someone who doesn't mind(or can't object to) being benched/rotated frequently. There'll be a few hidden gems left over once the bigger sides table their 25man squads on September 1st. Are season long loans an option? John Guidetti was the big one mentioned last year, but he's linked to Feyenord atm We were linked to a loan for Zaha which hasn't transpired- he would fit the bill. He might be too much of a tit though Ntep was another who almost came to us in January, but isn't he bad news personality wise? http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/qpr-may-feel-fortunate-to-miss-out-on-psychopath "displays psychopath behaviour"
My 'no' is more due to the fact that we should strengthen elsewhere first. I would never flat-out say no, as obviously you can always improve a squad. But midfield and defence need to be more of a priority.
Yes, but not as bad as we need another CM. Goals will keep you in this division as Pearson said, no point in putting up a brick wall at the back if you cant stick it in the other end.
Becomes a question of what you want to achieve. If it is 17th in the Prem, then no. If our sights are higher, then we need to add. Ulloa showed on Saturday that we have not had a forward of his ilk for some time. If he is injured or suspended then we would lose that physicality, so yes, I would want another striker. Wood Nugent nor Vardy offers that sort of physical presence. For that reason, Deeney would still be my choice out of the strikers we have been linked with.
I'd need to see a few more games first - if we are making chances but not finishing them, then yes. If we aren't getting the ball into the box often enough then strengthen elsewhere first.
I voted for not sure. If we can get someone better then what we have then yes. If we are after the likes of Deeney then no.
