My point being the best Sunderland side I've ever seen play (I'm 37) played with Stefan Schwarz on the left, he was no left winger but he was fantastic playing down Sunderlands left side, yes he tucked in and Mickey Gray was a good foil for him perhaps it's the lack of a good left back?
I think we were looking to invest in the left side, but it now looks as if all attention and finance has been diverted to centre forwards
We're still weak on the left, so I think "yes". Richardson is good from time to time, but not consistent enough for me.
Are you saying we need a winger instead of left midfielder though? I think Sunderland did so well because Schwarz tucked in as we were harder to break down. That and he used to kick other players and wind them up, Schwarz was a true unsung hero for me, clearly we don't have a player of his caliber for us but if it were Schwarz or Johnstone who fekkend off to Rangers I'd have picked Schwarz everytime anyway. I would suggest our middle two are not good enough for us to carry two wingers anyway.....
I remember Schwarz very well, I had a season ticket when he played for us, his strength was having Micky Gray bombing forward and over lapping. I thought Muntari could have played a similar role with Richardson last year. Do we need a new left winger?? on paper no we don't, Sess can play there and there is good back up in Richardson and then even Wickham. The problem is we don't have a left footed left back which is a big problem. Also Sess has not really played much on the left, so we don't know if that could be a good position to play him in.
