I just had a interesting thought today and this is what I have already mentioned on Twitter..... Maybe Andy Hessenthaler was the buffer between Martin Allen and Paul Scally in his role as Director Of Football last season, Martin Allen would speak to Andy Hessenthaler about players and Andy Hessenthaler would take those requests to Paul Scally. What does everyone else think about this ???
Feel his role may be being over-estimated by some Gills fans but we do have to wonder that the fact Martin Allen keeps mentioning players (Leon Clarke and Emile Sinclair to name but two) that he tried to sign and didn't get, how maybe Hess was the man who got those deal over the line. (the anti-Kinnear so to speak!)
I do remember that when Hess signed players that most of them would say that he really sold the club tp them. Clearly something that MA is not able to do. Hess did have a knack of spotting good players, just tactically wasn't quite there. He would make a great Assistant for someone.
I remember Allen saying early last season that he had good help from Hess, and im sure he did make Allen`s job easier.
People often mention Hess as being poor tactically, is MA really that much better? some of his substitutions have left me baffled and certainly failed to work.
Absolutely NOT! Hessy's best days at Gillingham were long behind him last season, he was an unmitigated failure as the manager the previous two season (Anything less than promotion is a failure) and was so unemployable he had to take some pointless job draining fund from the club
I think Hess probably was a good ambassador for the club in his more recent role that said I think the problems at the club are more completed than the absence of one man. As mentioned by others in this thread MA's tactics are often baffling but it will all come good after the Bradford game ! Fingers crossed
