The whole situation with relegation and that bad period almost made me forget that we've spent soooo many years near the top of the table right back since the mid 90s.

After getting back into the Premier League in one go, dusting ourselves off, sorting out our transfer policy and spending wisely, we've now got a very good team, and imo a starting XI which could rival any 'big club' for one of those spots just outside of the top 4.

I don't know, but it just seems like there's a rule written in the fabric of space itself which generally lays fortune on us and guides us to where we should be. Whilst some big clubs have faltered in a big way, there are other big clubs where, despite even the biggest problems, they always seem to work it out and stay up there with the best. We seem to have a spot of that fortune ourselves.

I do understand the frustration from some Sunderland fans who I've spoke to. From the outsiders view, it really must seem like everything just works out for us no matter what goes wrong. It's very logical that being relegated or losing your three best players in your return season should mark difficult times, but somehow it seems to have made us much stronger. Some people outside of our club must wonder what the hell is going on.

Speaking of this sort of fortune, we all know that Blackburn were a big club rivalling for honours for a while, so I wonder if they will have the same fortune? We can say they look like an awful team now, but we were in that situation just a few years back in the relegation season, and look at us now.

PS: Before anyone else whinges, I'm not saying we have a divine right to be there. Maybe the title of the thread wasn't right. I'm just saying that we've had an incredible stroke of good fortune, where almost every decision is the right one, and any negatives get swapped into positives. It almost FEELS like there's someone watching over us and giving us a short cut back up to near the top of the table. Obviously that isn't the case, but with the way things have went it feels like it.

When things go right for us, they go really right.

    But when it rains...

Yes we do belong near the top. We are a top club. It just highlights the absolute abomination of a job Ashley has done in his first 2 years. Disgrace.

You say 'when it rains' but it's rained a ****load and look where we are.

I spose there's always time to **** it up for good like, but things just seem, I don't know, too easy. It's almost like the god of football is just giving us little nudges here and there to keep us on the right track.

Definitely this. I'm glad we are where we are on merit, but I'm under no illusions that we simply deserve to be there (a notion that many other teams' fans negatively associate with the scousers & did with us in our relegation season).
We've finally started to lose that reputation and threads like this one & the let's finish 4th thread will only make people think we actually believe that again!

Dear lord, it's articles like this that make me ashamed of some of my fellow supporters. If I was an opposing supporter reading this, I would think that the fans of Newcastle United were the biggest egotistical, vain brats on the face of the earth.
Listen dude, nobody has a divine right to be at the top, not even Manchester United. And to hear things like this, just makes me cringe. Let's not forget, we haven't won a trophy for half a century.

But look where we've been. Championship, close to everything going tits up, legends in and out of the club with things getting worse.

But when it starts to go right it just clicks. It's nice.

Ohh shut up you miserable bastards. You've completely missed the point. And you can't really talk when you name is 'Toon4Europe' <doh>

I'm not talking about divine rights at all. All I'm saying is that we seem to get a big slice of fortune which most big teams get and which no other teams really do get. How many sides have went from being relegated to where we are now in a couple of years?

It just seems too good to be true really. I wouldn't exactly call it luck, but I think we've been given a big piece of fortune in how we've came on with the players we've got, almost to the point where it feels like someone, or something, is watching over us...

It's just the way we've managed to pick out the gems whilst dodging virtually every bullet sent our way. I'd call it divine intervention as opposed to a divine right.

PS: Yes this thread is partially tongue in cheek.

Its knobs like you that make me ashamed.

NUFC is in the top 10 football clubs in this country...and thats where they belong. Go support Notts County with ur small standards and fan bashing.

That's what I mean. I can't think of any other club who have had such a stroke of fortune where everything has just clicked together. Like I said, if there was a footballing god, it seems like he's watching over us.

Wow and now I know why some interpret us as delusional... No one has a god given right as you put it to be in the top of the league, we have got here through merit but we can easily go on a bad run of games and end up finishing 12th, even without injuries, Mike Ashley could sell keys players and we have players like Perch in the first team week in week out... We could still be in a relegation battle next season look at Everton.

Take nothing for granted, I feel very excited for the rest of the season but to even suggest we have some god given right to be up here is cringe-worthy, I hope oppisition fans arn't reading this!

No offence Chappaz but this sort of article is exactly why other clubs fans take the piss out out of us and where the "deluded" tag comes from.

We have no divine right to be high up the table, if you look over the premier league finishes before we we're relegated, there were some very good and high ones but we've also had our fair share of bottom half finishes, often with very good players in the team.

We dont "belong" anywhere, we belong where our performances on the pitch take us. And this hasn't always been where we are now.

Having said that though, we certainly have the fanbase of a top club and the pull of NUFC seems to still be a factor in us signing players, it would seem players from other countries still see us as a big club and we can compete for very good players with most of the league, but that still doesnt mean we "belong" anywhere.

So I suppose Everton and Aston Villa fans for example, aren't delusional for expecting to be in the Premier League top 10?.....but we are?

Did Chappaz say we belong challenging for the Premier League every season?!! Im confused.

Teams that belong near the top:

    Manure
    Arse
    Chel
    Liv
    Citeh (now)
    Toon
    Spurs
    Villa
    Everton
Leeds (massive fall from grace, but still belong there)

    Any arguments? Any additions?

Disagree with me if you like, but it really seems like we've been given a very fortunate shortcut back up near the top of the table when it comes to the path we've taken. No other 'big' club has faltered so badly and then got back up to where they were previously in such a short period of time. None. It does almost seem too good to be true, which is my point.

Of course I'm not seriously suggesting that there's divine intervention or some rule written in space, but it feels like it at times. If I was watching our club from the outside I'd just wonder how the hell.

Disagree, otherwise Leeds, Nottingham Forest etc should be there with us. You earn your place.

Come on man I'm not seriously suggesting there is a law written in space <doh>

It just feels like it with the fortune we've had, that's all.

    Bit of a pointless discussion.

We got where we are because we got ourselves there, no one has a divine right to anything, I don't think we should get carried away with ourselves either.
