It got me thinking, when we bought Veron, he was our first world-class signing, at that time Scholes was playing in his position, fast forward 13 years and we have a smiliar scenario where we bought Mata almost 2 months ago, in his position we have Rooney, Kagawa and Januzaj ( he can play there at times ), i just hope we don't waste Mata's talent.

    Suppose it could be similar

Mata wont help mid out like Rooney does, so playing him on the wing you can understand more (at least hes on the pitch) until you get stronger in the middle of the park

In short, you needed to lift the place with a decent signing but he isnt what you need right now. But you have him now I suppose so if you make decent centre mid signings maybe he will go to no 10

So Robson for example wasn't world class?

Not many Utd fans would agree with you matth, but you're entitled to your opinion.

I meant proper world-class signing, when we bought Veron, he was one of the best midfielders in the world.

I get what he means, he means he was the first player they signed who was world class when they signed him, as opposed to a player who was signed and then developed into a World class player whilst at United (like Cristiano Ronaldo for example)

He did well for us in the champions league but couldn't cope with the physicality of the premier league.

If you head a ball with a shaved head you aren't as good

Simple science, hair soaks up sweat (not that he broke a sweat). Shaved head = shinier head, ball skids off it. Ask Gerrez

<doh>, anyway, he was one of my favourite players while he was at United, it was a shame we bought at that time.

Sorry mate, like you say he couldnt handle the Prem, ie **** - I mean thats no good is it?!

MANCHESTER UNITED boss sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he offloaded Juan Sebastian Veron because he felt the Argentine could not handle the rigours of The Premiership.

The Old Trafford chief decided to cut his losses on the midfielder and sell him to Chelsea in a £15 million deal, a loss of some £13.1 million on the fee they paid Lazio two years ago, and has now conceded that Veron failed to live up to expectations during his time with the Red Devils.

"Juan Veron was capable of exceptional football and was talented. But, at times, he found the Premiership a bit difficult," declared Ferguson.

"He was a European player and that was where we got our best form from him."

The Scot also claimed that Veron was well aware of his proposed move to Chelsea from the moment rumours began to circulate of the West Londoners' interest in him, but stated that the player did not want to depart United.

"He didn't want to go. His agent was speaking to Chelsea and he knew it was happening.

"We had to look at the long-term view and, overall, the package we received was too good to turn down."

Fergie also went on to reject claims that his squad had been substantially weakened with the exit of Veron and David Beckham, and insisted the team which emerged as Premiership champions last term was still intact and would continue their impressive pre-season form in Sunday's Community Shield clash with Arsenal.

"The team that won at Newcastle, drew at Arsenal and beat Liverpool is still here. And I am not necessarily looking to change that team, either.

"The team that operated at the end of last season is fully ready to go out at the beginning of this season.

"In the past, we have not looked at this game (Community Shield) as being a great demand on our players but more as an opportunity for them to get their fitness up.

"That is because, in the past, we have always had rather low-key pre-seasons.

"But this pre-season has been different altogether because there has been a great competitive element to our game due to the quality of the opposition.

"And I fully expect us to be a bit further ahead than we normally are at this stage.

"We will be sharper than normal on Sunday for this game."

Before Fergie sold him, he had a go at the press for saying he would be leaving, ( i could be wrong ).
