Morning all, this might seem controversial but hear me out, i'm not talking about the United fans in the team, i.e. Giggs, Scholes, Welbeck and Evans, i'm talking about those who didn't support the club when they were growing up, i.e. Ferdinand, Rooney, Vidic and many more, i'm only asking because ever since Rooney said he loved the club and asked for a transfer, its got me thinking, are those players in question passionate about United.
One of your dafter questions Matth. I would suggest that the reason we score goals in the last minute and win/draw games with the very last kick is down entirely to the fact our players do care. The biggest thing in Fergie's repertoire is he makes them care. They'd be gone if they didn't.
Even if they didn't love the club they would take a certain level of professional pride in their 'job' to ensure that they do care. Simply if a professional footballer didn't care they wouldn't be competing at the highest level let alone at United. Don't expect them, or at least all of them, to have the same affection for the club as fans though Matth.
I don't think many players really care. Rooney for example really gives a toss about United. He cares about money and personal acclaim. I see more commitment from RVP than Rooney. RVP demonstrated a respect and admiration of United simply by turning down bigger money to move to City. Rooney used City to get a bigger salary at United. I have a sneaking feeling that Fergie is building a Rooneyless United. If we sign the Pole from Dortmund where is Rooney going to play and please don't say central midfield as his passing is woefully inconsistent?! But anyway, the fans care much more about the club than the players and many players care far too much about money. Fryers was a United fan but playing for his boyhood club wasn't as important as money. I love the club not the players which is why I won't go to extreme lengths to defend their misdemeanours and don't understand why seemingly reasonable and intelligent people will defend the indefensible in the name of a footballer who wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire!
I don't know, I think this sways towards the overly cynical. At the end of the day it is their job so it's no crime to look for the best pay deal, we are all within our rights to do that. It's what you do when you get that deal and I'd say based on level of commitment that Rooney cares, as do the vast majority of United players. Looking at it I reckon Nani and Anderson don't give a **** but the rest do. I agree entirely on the supporting of the club and not the players though. The blind worship of the players, by Pool fans especially, is embarrassing. Those players are there to do a job, end of. Nothing more when push comes to shove.
This. The players are employees, nothing more. I wonder if all the people expecting them to show undying loyalty to the club would show the same loyalty to their own employer if they were being paid 15 grand a year to do a job when people doing the same job for other companies were getting 25 grand a year? Or for that matter if they were getting 100 grand a week when others were getting 150 grand a week for doing exactly the same, and often doing a worse job. The principle is the same, just the sums get bigger. Similar thing for RVP - I don't think it was respect and admiration for Utd as much as he realised he could earn £190k a week for playing under the greatest manager in English football history (watch them bite ) and in a team with a clearly defined role and players who respect each other and the manager. Or he could earn £200k plus a week and be rotated with Mancini's goal shy love child whilst his other striker partner turns up to work whenever he wants. If you were offered 50 grand a year to manage Man Utd, or 60 grand a year to manage your local Tesco, what would you choose? Rooney is in many ways the perfect example of this. A couple of months after he wins Footballer of the Year and we come runners up in the league he is offered a low wage by a club who has just bought a homeless bloke and an unheard of Mexican, at the same time as City and Chelsea were throwing millions of quid at anything with a pulse and two functioning feet. Was it any wonder he told the board to jump and come back with an offer that he felt was reasonable? Would anyone not do the same if they had been the stand out performer in their entire industry only be told they were getting a below inflation pay rise and some M&S vouchers? And the board obviously did come back with what all parties felt was a reasonable offer - they would hardly have offered it if they felt it was unreasonable! Do we even think Scholes and Giggs would have stuck around for so long had we been bumping along in mid table with barely a trophy to our name for the past two decades? Heck, even Stevie Me as much as admitted he would have left Liverpool if they hadn't won the Champions League. Footballers have no more loyalty than any other employees, regardless of who they are or who they claim to support.
When do I start this Tesco job I dont care if players "care" or not., as long as UTD win that's what matters.
Somebody please answer me this: How is a permanent ban permanent if you can simply create a new account and continue the terror?
