Now that would be a bloody good laugh for an awful lot of English Club's supporters. It happened in 1974 so why not again?
Sadly for you Cidered, I feel that United under Van Girl will make quite a fist of it. I reckon top 3 I certainly wouldn't put much on them getting relegated I'm afraid Anyway, English football would not be the same without Manchester United
Couple of good signings short of coming very close. No champions league this year either which I find a shame as I enjoyed watching them..
remember twatting them 3-1, in the old 2nd div, with the east end roaring, doc doc Docherty who the f-----g hell is he. great days.
Wrong wings...there is no eastend at old trafford, we beat the great Manchester United 3-1 at their place in the old div.1, the game your thinking of was a 1-0 win at the gate some years before then in div.2.
Sorry Cider but it aint gonna happen...United will soon be champs of england again, better them than the foreign club that has become man.city!
As you correctly said bigjohn the score was 1-0 at Ashton gate and I have a couple of memories from that day. There was some stupid United fan going around to various parts of the ground trying to provoke a fight but everyone he approached told him to f*** off and eventually he just smiled and gave up, just before meeting several security staff who promptly kicked him out. Leaving the Gate in my car I ploughed in to the back of a car carrying United fans and I thought oh my god I'm on a hiding to nothing here but when they approached me there were so friendly and guess what, the wannabee troublemaker was one of them and he told me he had never been to a stadium like ours where everyone was so friendly. The memory bank still works! Lovely day!
We also beat the 1-0 in the 2nd Division with Donnie Gillies getting the winner. The 3-1 away win was courtesy of a Kevin Mabbutt hat-trick. An I agree Bigjohn that a Man U relegation will not happen under the present Premiership and Champions league scenario. But it would be funny for a lot of fans if the impossible did become a reality.
stand corrected, a few beers on the day and since, love to know the crowd that day, guesing 34-35,000.
We are both correct Wings. Season 74-75 we did the double in Div 2. 1-0 home John Emanuel and 1-0 away Donnie Gillies. In 1st Div at home not so good. 76-77 draw 1-1 27,800 77-78 lost 0-1 25,858 away draw 1-1 78-79 lost 1-2 24,408 away win 3-1 Mabbutt hat trick 79-80 draw 1-1 28,783 I never believed these attendance figures. Much lower than actual because the Board were creaming money off the receipts in a big way!
Beating them home and away in '74 was fantastic, but from my recollection both scores were 1-0 to us, although we did win 3-1 at Old Trafford in the 1st Division (Kevin Mabbutt hat trick). I saw the 2nd division game down here where Jon Emmanuel got the winner. The Manc scum (who were probably from Manchester in those days!!!!!) smashed up Coronation Road on their way back to Temple Meads. When we won 1-0 at Old Trafford in injury time (Gillies) the ungracious and vile Tommy Docherty labelled us as the worst team he'd ever seen.
I like many others had an affection for Man U because of the Busby Babes and of course Munich. But the day that Tommy Docherty slammed us like he did, was the day when I lost any affinity with Man U and I have detested them ever since.
Amen to that. I saw Man U with Best, Law, Charlton, Stepney and co at Eastville in the LC back in '72 (I think) in a 1-1 draw. Rovers actually won the reply 2-1 at Old Trafford !! I also saw them beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge 2-1 with Alan Gowling getting the winner in the last minute after Alan Hudson had given Chelsea the lead in front of the Shed. Fond memories from a very different age.
Most Man United fans are glory supporting ****s, Some were whinging about being 7th to me when we were in the **** again last season. Their arrogance is unbearable, I hope Man United disappear into the abys and lose all their stupid dickhead fans, I hate Manchester United with passion.
Yep, I remember walking back to Temple Meads with a couple of mates and having to keep our mouths and accents very quiet indeed. The Man U 'fans' were rocking double decker buses...
