I'm sure this forum will be more use than google which gave me more questions than answers.

I need to drill through some tiles in the bathroom, should i drill the holes in the middle of the tile or at the grouting?

Use a tile drill if you are drilling though the tiles themselves.

The bloke in the video said use a carbide tipped drill bit unless it's a porcelain tile, then you need to use something else FFS ????

    Tiles are so passé.
    They belong in a skip.

    You're welcome.

The difficult bit is starting the hole without the drill wandering. Tile drills are much sharper, once your through the hard outer glazing the rest is a piece of piss. Try and keep a flow of water on the cutting area to cool, lubricate and clear the debris from the cut.

Tiles drills are vital and make it really easy
And no...don’t try and drill in the grout because it will put pressure on the side of the tile and probably cause a layer to crack off the tiles

OK so a bit more info to help those offering advice, the tiles are not those shiny glazed ones you see in cheap dodgy public bogs. I have no idea what they are made of but they're not shiny and big 60 x 60cm.

Been to the shop for a drill bit the guy sold me a pair one like an arrow head to go through the tile and the other for drilling into the wall behind. He said only go slowly and keep the bit cool with water.

I used to drill holes in the centre of China dining plates to assemble into cake stands which the Missus used to flog on her market stall.

Which is essentially horizontal tile drilling.

    Masking tape on the surface.

    High drill speed.

    Low drilling pressure.

Regular squirt of cold water onto the drill and partly drilled hole.

Don't drill constantly, stop ever five or so seconds and cool the drill bit and tile.

I drilled into a bed of sand to stop the plates moving, as vibration can easily crack ceramics. You won't have this problem if your tiles are securely attached to the wall.

I broke the occasional plate but not many.

Strange but true...Start the drill off in reverse so as to score the glaze and give you a small dimple to mark the hole location. The drill will not wander off after this. Light pressure and let the drill do the work.
