Now that McInnes has been relieved of his duties the same old crappy names are being thrown around. SOD seems to be the fan favourite at the moment but even he isn't an inspiring choice to fix a team that is barely good enough for League 1. A lot of our issues over the past few years have been down to poor footballing decisions. We've signed a large number of poor players, and some potentially good ones that haven't been given a chance to show what they can do. In addition, under McInnes we've wasted money on Scottish players that either don't play or shouldn't play. From top to bottom, there is a distinct lack of footballing sense. I think that going forward the board should look to install a Director of Football to handle nearly all football related decisions at the club. Lansdown has big dreams for the club, especially of the club becoming self-sufficient. A top-quality Director of Football would help us sign top-quality players, would manage the budget and would be able to manage our push towards a self-sufficient academy. Any thoughts on whether we'd be a club suited to a DoF? If so, any ideas on the kind of guy we'd want in the role? It could be a great role for older managers wanting to retire from day-to-day activity, or from notable older scouts/directors like David Dein.
Joe Jordan. Firstly forget that he's been our manager before and dismissed the last time. That was nearly twenty years ago and in the meantime he's been well acknowledged within football as someone to be respected. He has a wealth of football knowledge and contrary to his aggressive style as a player, he is a great thinker about the game. He has played successfully abroad in Italy, speaks fluent Italian which means that he at least has the intelligence or capacity to do this, and surely as Harry's right hand man for the past seven/eight years will have done his share of scouting/evaluating foreign players and coaching methods. He has lived on the outskirts of Bristol ever since he came here as a player in 1987 so surely has an affinity with the city and it's people. I think he is ideal for Director of Football and it will allow City to do a thorough search for the First team Coach position, rather than the knee jerk appointment I think we will probably get. PS; is it significant that O'Driscoll has been appointed as Head Coach rather than Manager?
There is one major problem with the DOF route do you get the best managers look at what is happening at Blackburn where you have an effective DOF telling the manager who to pick and signing players noone has ever heard of except the bloke what signed them.
It works well on the continent but it will only do so if both DOF and Head Coach work and communicate together rather than each trying to score points off each other.
My thoughts exactly, although if I remember correctly McInnes was first announced as a Head Coach, rather than a manager. I think the board uses the terms interchangeably. Joe Jordan would be a good shout. In a few years I can definitely see it happening, especially when wheelin' dealin' Harry Redknapp decides to call it a day.
