Number 1 priority is to keep him. When did you last see a young midfielder in a Charlton shirt demanding the ball, making space and driving the team on? Hands up anyone who wasn't thinking "Scott Parker". It looks quite probable that we'll go down, which would make it difficult for us to hang on to him. It might still be possible to persuade him to sign a longer contract if he (and his Dad) could be convinced that he would be at the centre of a drive to get back up at the first attempt, which, if we failed, would trigger a release clause. That's the best I can think of.
There is no doubt in my mind that Diego Poyet is the hottest prospect to make a debut for us since... ...Jordan Cousins.
The rumour is that his contract runs out in the summer, and he does'nt want to sign a new contract yet. If we manage to let a player of his quality leave for free, it would expose a lot of the hot air we've been hearing since the take over for what it is. This is a player we need to convince to stay, and to be honest, I'd rather he got a new contract than CP as a priority.
We should have got him on a longer contract ages ago, before he made his debut, and everyone realised how good he is. You can bet your life Nathan Jones knew how good he was, he hasn't suddenly become a good player. That's why I said I was seething about his situation, anyone who watches the U-21's could see it, but that does not include the manager. I don't blame Roland, or the previous owners, who invested heavily in the Academy, and introduced the U-21's. It's the manager's responsibility to recognise and nurture the young talent at this stage.
I can't see him staying. His dad has first dibs in him and if we get relegated I hardly think 1st div football would be good for his professional development.
He's 18, it would be better for him to play first team football rather than be in a Dev Squad for a Prem side
I doubt that really. Firstly development squads, are more demanding than 1st division football. You train with the talented first team, you learn the skills not available to what are glorified pub teams in Div 1. You have the finest coaching, medical treatment and pitches. You don't get lumped in the air week in weeks out, you get looked after socially, your personal devoplpement is catered for, rather than hanging around pubs with journeymen, nearly made it, footballers. I would never allow my son to play in the first division risking his ligaments on dodgy pitches he's when he could be playing better football in the championship or as a gifted trainee with say Man U.
He is gone. Just like Defoe, Parker, and that 'will give you loanees in return, Shelvey. Someone, should be very proud of what they done with Poyet but history will make sure it won't be anyone connected with Charlton.
The last youngster we sold to say.. Manure.. was a certain Sean McGinty, perhaps as good as Gomez at the same age (do you know who Joe Gomez is T?) but Sean decided to sign apprentice forms for Manure rather than us..... he was sacked by SAF last summer and signed for a L1 club. Now, would he have been better off working with our youth team (who he had some considerable success with) or go to the bright lights of Manchester? Sean played in the same U18 team as Jordan Cousins who stayed at Charlton.... which made the better decision? Sean or Jordan?
The question was would he better off playing first team football in Div 1 than contract to a devoplpement squad. From my perspective and dropping off my cafc bias, definitely not in this case, . You have identified two players where the argument may be reversed. That is not the test to apply, two players cannot be the same as their are too many variables. I could give you 100 examples where sending players out to div 1 clubs was considered and rejected based on their personalities and playing styles. You should argue why Poyet would benefit from Div 1 football. His dad is no 'give me a cut'shifter but a pro looking out for his son. It makes no sense. It's like sending your brightest student to go back a year in a class with all the thickos and doughnuts
I heard, when Diego was first coming on the scene in the youth team that Gus said he wouldn't want to manager his son... clearly I must have been dreaming that hearing all the rumours. I believe though Roland likes his youth team as he made out and will be doing all he can to sign up Poyet.
Shelvey was insulted by a few of our more ignorant fans for going to LIverpool, Yet he signed a contract extension which put Charlton in a strong bargaining position, even though they did not take advantage of it. If Poyet leaves for free maybe they'll realise that Jonjo really did his best for the club.
He won't be going. And Ted you're right - Gus said he'd not want to manage Diego as well as being very complimentary about his education at charlton.
