Chelsea are set to offer Didier Drogba as a sweetener in their attempts to sign Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp continues to deny that the £30 million-rated Croatian is available, amid strong interest from the Blues and Manchester United.

Modric has been less decisive though, and has made no secret of his wish to experience Champions League football once again following his exploits with Spurs last season.

Drogba's spot at Stamford Bridge has looked threatened ever since the record arrival of Fernando Torres from Liverpool in January. And with Chelsea now linked with moves for more strikers, the Ivory Coast international could be offered as part of the Modric deal.

Redknapp is known to be a big fan of the striker and his arrival would certainly soften the blow of losing Modric.

The ex-Dinamo Zagreb man has been highlighted at Stamford Bridge as the player with the best potential to bring out Torres' goalscoring best.

And with Redknapp happier with his quota of midfielders than his strikeforce, Chelsea might be able to convince Spurs that getting Drogba in their ranks would be a good idea.

But the Spurs manager has promised that he has no intention of letting Modric or Gareth Bale leave White Hart Lane this summer as he attempts to get his side back into the Champions League.

I would jump at the chance to sign Drogba, but not at this cost.

Despite how the Mirror twists what Luka says in order to create an "original" news story, Modric has kept saying that he's happy to stay at spurs. He also signed a 6 year contract earlier this season. I'm not worried.

Not that I'd ever really defend journos - most of them are spineless ****es with no backbone or morals.

But, at the end of the day they are paid to report on news, if there's none about they have to bend stories a bit to pay the mortgage!

I'd nail this fat bearded **** to the cross first though <ok>

I'm tired of the constant Luka chat... the stories are going to get odder and odder.

This Drogba plus 30 mil nonsense is pure fairytale.

Thats Martin Samuel, no? Or whatever his name is. I find his write ups a good read when I happen to stumble across a Daily Mail

Martin Samuel is a total surfer.
He's a sad old Iron who I would love to have seen crying into his bitter as his beloved Essex Olympians crashed into the Championship.

A true tosspot of the highest order.

Unsure why he's so low in your estimation peeps

Maybe somewhere along the line he dared to say something negative about Spurs is my guess ;) ?

Equally fanciful (and doubtlessly false) is a report in the Mirror that Chelsea will sign Sneijder in a cash-plus-Essien deal.

Anyone got a WordPress account they can start a story that we're offering cash-plus-Palacios for Essien?

Martin Samuel is your average Wet Spam fan - bitter about always being inferior to Tottenham
