'Diddy Teams' is a Scots term for 'small' Football Clubs. Examples in England would be Chesterfield and Gillingham.
However, we should appreciate that most FCs are like Chesterfield or Gillingham :
1) It exists because local people created the FC originally
2) It has a loyal (if small) Fan Base
3) It puts their community on the map
4) It will (probably) never win the League Championship, or any major Cup competition either.
5) For most (if not all) of its existence the FC has never been higher than Level 3
(Third Division - 'League 1')
6) Nevertheless, it is still supported by its fans.
Some teams that were great are now at Levels 3 & 4, e.g., Huddersfield Town, 3 times League Champions in the 1920s. Let this serve as a warning to the currently mighty to not assume their greatness is forever. Teams, like Shares, can go Down as well as Up !
Finally, do not forget the FCs in the Non-League pyramid below the Football League. These go from Level 5, Step 1 (Conference Premier) to all the Levels below. These FCs are also 'Diddy Teams' and simultaneously the grassroots of football.
All 'Diddy Teams' deserve appreciation and for most players they provide their first opportunity in football.
