Derry: I'll fight for my place at QPR The veteran faces competition from summer signings Park Ji-Sung and Samba Diakite in midfield, but is determined to remain a regular under Mark Hughes next season 14 Jul 2012 19:54:00 By Simon Sinclair QPR midfielder Shaun Derry is determined to fight for his place in Mark Hughes' starting XI, despite the influx of new players at Loftus Road. The Rs have been busy in the transfer market thus far, signing Park Ji-Sung from Manchester United and wrapping up a permanent deal for Samba Diakite, who was on loan at the club last season from Nancy. But the 34-year-old is confident he can still be a key player for Hughes, and is hopeful of securing a regular spot in the side. "There are players that can cover all positions and to get players from the likes of Manchester United coming here, it's great for the club," he told Sky Sports. "Competition is going to be unbelievable. Last year was fantastic to play in. I'm hopeful that I can stick around and prove a point next season. "I'm hopeful that's going to be the case and until I'm told otherwise, I'll carry on doing what I'm doing. I've got confidence in my own ability, but it's up to what the manager sees. "Until I'm told otherwise, I'll just crack on, like I have done throughout my career."
Shaun Derry is the type of player that never really gets the credit he deserves. A player that whn we initially signed we all thought why...BUT he proved, sorry more than proved he is and was the type of player we needed. I only, that Derry along with the likes of Hill - when their careers are coming to an end, we hang ontothem and encourage them to do their coaching badges. Their are players around with natural skill, their are players that would run through brick walls and there are players that work their wotsits off to get to where they are
If we play a 4-2-3-1 system Derry will get some games. If we gO 4-4-2 then me thinks he might not even make the bench. A great pro.
I think he still has a place at the club - Unless MH changes his tictacs we will play 4-5-1 away from home against the top 6 so space for him at least on the bench.
Probably won't get into the starting eleven as regularly as last season, but will still be an important part of the squad. We need players with his kind of commitment!
I dont think Derry will start any games until we get suspensions or injuries Faurlin and Diakite will start in the center of midfield I think
It may take time for Faulin to settle into playing full matches. Look out for Derry coming on after 70 minutes.
