Demba Ba - worth a punt at £7.5 million?

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Hoddle is a god, Dec 27, 2012.

  1. It's being reported that Demba Ba has a release clause in his Toon contract at around the £7.5 million mark. That seems like a highly reasonable sum for a player of his undoubted qualities.

What would you guys think if Levy invoked the clause in a bid to tempt him, here?

He's a good player and we need another striker, in my opinion, but I'm not sure how he'd fit in.
He'd be perfect for the Scousers.

No loyalty, and another Defoe in style of play. I've listened to Toon fans who say the same things we do, all roses when they're flying in, but largely anonymous when they're not, team play not great...all sounds a bit familiar doesn't it.

He'd be a useful addition for anybody given his goalscoring record, but Liverpool desperately need him. He would be a perfect foil for Suarez. I can't believe they are considering quite big money for Sturridge, who doesn't give them height and power up front, but would want to occupy the same space as Suarez.

i would :D there is a thread on the newcastle board were the person that posted it, stated BA is too greedy and should be left out, did his fellow fans agree? One fan, who was on here recently but the large majority want to see BA start, and thats because he is a lethal finisher and the general view on their board is that he's their best forward overall.

Some of their fans expect him to be lethal AND have the awareness of sheringham, not asking for much

However being realistic there would be no point in signing him while we have Defoe as it would be one or the other.

No thanks, not for 7.5m, he is no better than what we already have and has a dodgy knee. I`d rather see a top class young and hungry forward coming in.

If you've visited their board, then you've gone further into this than me. If thats the concensus on their board then fair enough, but my eyes see him as JD MkII.

Stats wise for what its worth, says this season Ba has one more goal, but no assists, JD has 2. Last season JD scored 17 goals and 7 assists, Ba 16 goals and 2 assists. Adding sway to JD's cause is that he started just over half the games Ba did.

notso, wasnt a dig at your reply! just was fresh in my mind as had a debate with a newcastle fan over Ba & Cisse.

I think there are a few newcastle fans unhappy with Ba and his contract situation and want rid.

but as for the assists, Ba doesnt provide many direct assists, but is often involved in their attacking play, be that scoring, holding the ball up or forcing defenders into mistakes and that for me is just as important as the final pass.

Problem is, we;d pay £7.5m and he'd be off to the ACoN as soon as the cheque cleared.

Not for me. As has been said, no better than we've already got. And I would also like to see the money go towards someone else. I feel he'd be like Darren bent.

I don't think he's got the intricate footwork required for our style of play.

For the money you won't find another proven PL goalscorer. So I'd go for it.

    How old is he?

Great player but nope. Don't particularly like his attitude and don't think we need another out and out striker especially since he'd be demanding wages that would make him nearly a top earner.

    Quality player though.

What's the issue with his attitude? I wasn't aware he had one or have I missed something?

You haven't missed anything, other then the papers inventing this "attitude" over the contract situation and if the guy has a bad game, he is made a scapegoat and attacked for having an "attitude".

He refused to train at Hoffenheim to get a move to West Ham in which he wasted no time activating his ability to leave on a free and followed by his release fee being revealed last January after just 6 months at Newcastle, which of course he had nothing to do with. Great player but I'm happy with Defoe and Ade and would prefer they were rotated as Gylfi's recent performances deserve to get him more game time and the side looks more balanced playing one up top. As I've said before, if we were to get a new striker they should be young, willing to sit on the bench and preferably able to play in another position too.

    Not taken as one. :)

The fact there were any that wanted rid was what got my attention, good finisher, but so is JD. At first glance you'd think there's not much in it, but JD's all round game has improved as has his assist stats, though I agree with the final pass not being the be all and end all. JD is involved in the same way for us as Ba is for them, we can't say for sure how many goals Toon are better off for thanks to Ba's work, but 7 goals for other players have definitly happened as a result of JD's work is all I can say.

Its not really an argument, I just don't think he's an improvement on what we have, and unless he's first choice I can't see he'd want to come here, doesn't seem the type happy to wait his chance.
