Newcastle have been linked with a somewhat surprising move for Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero, who will leave Turin next summer.

The Guardian has speculated that the Toon could be one of several clubs put on alert after the 36-year-old was told by Juve he would not be offered a new contract.

Del Piero's agent has confirmed this decision will not encourage his client to end his career but, instead, the Italian will pursue opportunities further afield.

“President Andrea Agnelli said Del Piero will no longer be a Bianconeri player, but that doesn’t mean he’ll stop with football," Claudio Pasqualin told Radio Mana Mana.

"He may well look to an experience abroad."

Newcastle are known to be in the market for goalscoring reinforcements, although these are likely to come in January.

Reports in the French press claim Newcastle are close to agreement with Sochaux that will see Mali striker Modibo Maiga move to St James' Park in the New Year.

Alan Pardew had attempted to sign Maiga in the summer, but was left frustrated by the frugality of the Newcastle board.

Del Piero? Couldn't we just get Michael Owen back? He might have some decent racing tips.

    20 posts all advertising a different forum? A forum with a section for new folks to introduce themselves . . . . . . . all 54 of them. A proper footie forum <doh>

<laugh> we have more posts on this board than that entire website has. In fact, I have more posts on here than half the sections on that site.

No chance he's past it and really don't see it happening. Wouldn't want him remember Owen and Kluivert anyone.

ya know.. this wouldnt be as bad as people are thinking... give him a year contract... let him fall in love with the club then try to get him on as a youth coach or in a scouting role if hes interested when his contract runs out.

    No chance.

He's 10 years older than our current recruitment ethos allows.

Great player in his time but his time is gone.

Always loved Del Piero but surely he'll be way past it now. There's a reason Maldini, Totti etc play for so long and it's because they dont leave Serie A.

I remember thinking Sol was a decent signing at the time as he could cover well and pass on experience.

    How wrong was I....
