From Kopsource this evening: Following the news of Damien Comolliâs departure from his role as Liverpoolâs Director of Football, David Dein and Johan Cruyff have emerged as targets to replace the Frenchman. Reds chairman Tom Werner explained the decision to part ways with Comolli in a club statement. âPart of the reason we made this decision now is because we want to start the process of finding an excellent replacement,â he said. Dein has been present for Liverpoolâs last two games against Blackburn and Aston Villa, and may have been involved in preliminary discussions about replacing the outgoing Comolli, who could have already known his fate as he stood smiling next to his prospective replacement for photographers. Cruyff, who has recently taken up an advisory role with Ajax, is also of interest to the Reds as they look to tweak the current set-up. Curiouser and curiouser.... GKRK
Dein has got the pedigree within the game. The one thing we've been appalling at this year is playing footsie with the halls of power. As unpalatable as it is I think the owners know that while us Liverpool fans can be anti-establishment, they can't & fully realise their investments potential at the same time and anyway as far as Boston goes Henry IS the establishment and I bet he's used to being so. If this pans out it shows the owners are learning and remarkably quickly for people that knew nothing about the nuances of football on & off the pitch a year ago. To be fair this years been a steep learning curve. They look like tough cookies.
They certainly take no prisoners and that is good to see.Out of the 2 mentioned i would say Dein but these names are speculation from the rags and tv reports.Would be good if we got Dein though
I only hear good things about Dein, but we all know what kind of name and attraction that Cruyff would bring. He did help turn Barca around back in the day and would be good for us as well. Should be an exciting summer.
Yeah he did do a good job at Barca and the name Cruyff is world known through his playing career yes he would attract the players we need Let's see what happens in the next week or so as they will want to have someone in DC's place ASAP let the new man know what we want and he can go straight to work for this summer window exciting indeed
British, over-priced, cup players, useless in the league This summer got very exciting after all of this.
Dein is 69 years old so I reckon he will be given a part time consulting role where Cruyff is more suited to the Director of Football role. Dein would definately be a massive 'signing' given his ties with the FA, UEFA and FIFA.
Cruyff would be a fantastic name to have on board and Dein has experience of moving stadium. I'd prefer the former if not for any other reason than the latter was at Arsenal.
all i can say is this came out the minute the news came. thats why it is in the press. cruyff is past it imo and frankly while a name... is that what we want or do we want an actual proper guy who will do the job well and not get involved in the team. comolli proved one thing... he wanted to be i nthe dressing room and did the fateful translation. a DoF should be nowhere near the dressing room.
Im glad they have taken swift action, they dont seem to take losing and underachieving. which is good! But Kenny needs one more season i think, but if not. The money ball the owners use will surly point to rafa?
One of the reasons why Dein was so popular at Arsenal was because of his ability to interact with the playing staff and that included coming into the dressing room on many occasions.
is it? is that why their senior players got so up themselves then? or why they failed to win anything since 2004? I don't like the thought of the players looking at someone other than the managaer for direction or authority... just my opinion
Dein was the man responsible for bringing in Wenger and helping to sign players like Bergkamp etc i.e. the Invincibles. But if you rather concentrate on his final 3 years there (2004-2007) when they didnt win anything, than the previous decade of building a top club incl league titles and the countless number of top players he helped sign then fair enough.
i've no opinion on dein. i offered a comment that cruyff was past it. In the end everything dein did is a long time in the past at arsenal now so if we think he;'s the guy for the next 5 years fine. I don't mind but i'll stand y the opinion that ANY DoF needs to stay well away from training and dressing rooms.
A lot of people think that players would come to Liverpool because of what we did in the past. Just because Dein achieved a lot with Arsenal IN THE PAST, doesn't mean that we dismiss his credentials and achievements.
A lot of people expecting Cruyff to be formally announced today apparently. From what he did at Barcelona, completely revolutionising their youth set up, I'm feeling really good about him coming to LFC. Unsure what kind of role he will be in, but his appointment definitely fits well with our focus on youth. http://english.ajax.nl/News/Archive/Article/Cruijff-steps-down-1.htm For me this is a really encouraging move from the owners, given how the cowboys started, I've always been wary of FSG. However this complete restructuring overhaul seems to imply they're committed for the long run and looking to build sustainable long-term success.
Interesting that 2 names suddenly pop-up without any comment from the club. I will wait to see what FSC/LFC have to say officially before getting exceited or annoyed. Sounds to me like some people are flying kites.
