Just received this from a very good mate and in the group I usually meet up with. 'Morning, can u post this on 606 please? Young Stortford is the 18 year old lad who's at Uni at Durham (you know him as he always goes with me and his dad) After the train home from the match last night, a small group of people were walking towards the Wearmouth Bridge, when the 18 year old son of @Stortford (https://www.readytogo.net/smb/members/43592/) noticed a person on the other side of the railings. He calmly talked to the person while @SAFC2012 (https://www.readytogo.net/smb/members/31948/) obviously called for assistance...... for help. He managed to keep the person safe until the Police arrived and were able to bring the person to safety. That's a massive thing for anyone to do, never mind an 18 year old and he deserves a thread of recognition.'
Just to add my own comment. I know this lad and he's a great softly spoken young fella. Thankfully this worked out and, hopefully, the poor sod who was jumping will be cared for in the proper way. The flip side is that, if young Stortford had spoken to them and they jumped, he'd forever wonder if he'd said the wrong thing. That's a massive burden to carry imo. Well done son.
Thats one hell of a responsibility to decide to take on. He's shown a quality that sadly is disappearing these days -- he put someone else ( a stranger at that) before himself. Well done son, I hope that karma sees this and sends something really good in your direction
Sod it, I'm putting the names on here in case our fanzines or media are looking in ... ... Aidan Murphy, 18 a student at Durham University and Paul Haley of Gateshead. After a long emotional day in London it would be very easy to call 999 and get off home, no one wants to see another human being taking their own life. Very proud to have them as mates.
Well done to the two fans It would have been so easy to turn the head and look the other way Unfortunately as I know it will affect them later when they realise the magnitude of what they have done. Some one tried to do the same thing at the Redheugh Bridge crossing the Tyne and I still think about what if....20 years later ... what if I wasnt crossing the bridge at 8.30 at night What if, I didn't see him on the other side of the railings and stopped and what if an off duty Policeman hadn't pulled over to see why I had left my van in the middle of the bridge and helped me to hold onto him as he was hanging onto the railings with one hand The two lads may need support themselves, maybe not now but when they reflect on what they have done. I hope there are people around to support them Again well done
Well done to the two lads. Superb effort. Hope they are also Ok as that could also affect them at a later date.
Hats off to them. To show such maturity and take on that responsibility at 18 shows what he is / they are made of. Well done!! And good luck to the person that he helped!
