Well the season is upon us in 2 weeks time and I think attacking wise we have made some very good signings that should make for some eventful matches next season. However the defensive as it stands is a massive worry, in particularly the well documented fullback positions currently occupied by two midfielders. I think this is an area where we are definitely weaker as things stand if you compare to last season. 2012/13 ------------------Mignolet------------------- Gardner--------JOS------Cuellar--------Rose 2013/14 ------------------Mannone------------------ Gardner-------JOS-------Brown-------Colback Its a big worry on how long Wes Brown will actually hold up throughout the season as we have no idea what the stand in guys are going to be like and I don't want to judge Mannone too early but hes got some big gloves to fill after the Mig last season. Through no fault in the club trying we have failed to bring in fullbacks (to date) and have the stand in guys and as paying, loyal fans I believe after last season we deserve to have proper fullbacks at the club. Not only that but to aid with the way PDC wants to play as I just cant see Gardner & Colback providing the attacking width PDC refers too. This then creates a similar problem to last year with our defence sitting deep and Johnson/Giaccherinni receiving the ball deep and we all know how frustrating that season turned out. I don't want to get all doom and gloomy but next season will be a struggle in the short term until PDC gets players in and teaches them his way of football but we MUST back him, you cant deny that with all the optimism the new signings have made we are a mess at the back still but I am confident that in the long term we have the owner, manager and scouts to solve these problems and deliver some success in the future. I think I speak for everyone when I say I am absolutely itching to get a fullback signed before Fulham, thats why I renewed by season tickets to see new players, especially fullbacks and as things stand I'm feeling a little let down if that is our back four for Fulham. KTF.
I reckon we will get Peruzzi still and there is still 4-5 weeks of the transfer window left so I'd be suprised if we didnt sign anyone else.
I'm keeping calm and relatively quiet on the fullback situation. There's still time to sort it. However, if that window closes with midfielders at fullback then I'll become a lot more vocal.
