no lads... calm down it ain't Willo....

    http://www.themag.co.uk/2015/06/newcastle-defender-to-be-offered-new-contract/?

News this morning that Newcastle defender Paul Dummett is set to be offered a new and improved contract by the club.

Only 19 months ago (November 2013) the United player signed a long-term deal that tied him to the club for as long as six years.

However, the Shields Gazette say that their information is that Dummett will be given a better deal in recognition of his progress and the fact he is now a first team player.

The newspaper also report that the Geordie defender will take over the number 3 shirt following the departure of Davide Santon, trading up from number 36. This being further confirmation that he is seen as a first choice player now.

Whilst Paul Dummett is a wholehearted player and has got some ability, I think most Newcastle fans would see him as a squad player rather than a choice for the first eleven.

Ideally a new left-back would come in ahead of both Dummett and Haidara, who didn’t convince last season.

If Paul Dummett is in the first team, then I think supporters would far prefer to see him in the middle of defence, where he easily outperformed the failing experienced trio of Coloccini, Taylor and Williamson.

What isn’t up for debate is that Newcastle’s defence needs to show major improvement after year on year being a weakness to the team, last season conceding more goals (63) than every other Premier League club apart from QPR.

Hopefully Steve McClaren and his new coaching team will be a major step up on what has gone before and bring out improvement in the players already at St James Park, maybe even properly defend and attack the off set-play…

However, the thought of going into the new season without any significant defensive signings, preferably a minimum of two, is unthinkable.

I'm happy with that to be fair. I think we should move him into the middle properly. I thought he looked decent there. Just needs to play CB more consistently to get some experience.

    This!

So that's our business done in terms of defence.

Now we just need to offer Riviere an extended contract and we're sorted for thd season.

Still not convinced by him in either role. I think he is decent back up. Haidara is ****e. I agree we should have been looking to buy a left back who is actually good (can't believe I'm saying this after Alan used to have 9 on the pitch at once)

There are some things that actually sit outside the realm of open to humour. As you know with me there are not very many, but this is definitely one such matter. You should be ashamed of yourself, its just sick.

Agreed Obi - there are some things you can't joke about if you are to pick up the all round Mr Nice Guy. Some additional ones:
    1) we have offered Ferryera a 6-year contract after last years excellent loan spell
    2) Shola is coming back as combined fitness and shooting coach
    3) Williamson will be replacing Colo as the new club captain
    4) They are building a statue of Lee Charnley to replace the Bobby Robson one

Dummett is a decent squad player, I dont see any reason to offer the guy a new contract when he recently signed a 6 year deal. The new deal appears to me as the club accepting him as a first team player now, but i dont see him being much more than a sub or cover for the full team. Ideally we would get rid of either Dummett of Haidara and sign a first choice left back and keep one as cover.

Who knows, Maybe dummet will get better this season. He's still somewhat young. He's not bad defensively so moving him to CB would be wise.

No issues with him as a Squad player .. I hope the new deal is not 1st team player type one, but an incremental improvement on his old..3 bottles of pop and as many pies as you can eat ..SD youngster type contract

I really didn't think he was that bad. Our central defense really struggled. The fact we were aweful going forward didnt help. I think Dummet might come good especially if switched to CB.

Thought he did okay at Centre-back. His distribution really needs working on as it currently isn't good enough to play left back and doesnt have much idea coming forward. I know you should choose defenders on their ability to defend but having a couple of them in the same side who have a tendency to just hoof it forward dictates the whole style of play of the team. Play him at centre half where he can just win the ball and then give it to the likes of Colback or Abeid and he is more effective.
