Sunderland could discover the fate of Sam Allardyce by Thursday, according to reports.

For while the Football Association have now spoken to Steve Bruce about the England job, they hope to have completed their interview process - with Eddie Howe and Jurgen Klinsmann understood to be in the running - in time for a full board committee meeting scheduled in two days.

Allardyce flew back from the Black Cats’ Austrian training camp last week to hold talks with FA chief executive Martin Glenn, vice-chairman David Gill and technical director Dan Ashworth.

Though he did so with his club’s consent, the Wearside outfit appealed to English football’s governing body to complete their recruitment process as quickly as possible in order to minimise the disruption to their pre-season preparations.

However, the FA have outlined their intention to undergo a comprehensive search for the man to replace Roy Hodgson, and to perform due diligence on each candidate.

That suggested a long, agonising wait for Sunderland, who have yet to sign a new player this summer.

What should Sunderland do with Sam Allardyce?

But sources claim Hull City manager Bruce has now been sounded out by the FA headhunters, with another suggesting a further candidate was approached on Monday.

AFC Bournemouth boss Howe is in America with his club, while US head coach Klinsmann’s wherabouts are unclear.

But the FA have a full board meeting on Thursday, when its councillors expect to be informed of the three-man panel’s choice for the England role.

And it should be a short time after then that Sunderland will learn whether or not Allardyce is to stay or go.

Hope it comes down to Budget. Big sam will want a lot of sports science equipment and will demand a lot of investment virtually installing a whole new department. Brucie just wants a bag of oranges for the players at half time and a couple of pies for himself. FA would go with the oranges and pies all day long.
