Hull isn't as bad as all that. The town centre is ok, and they made a real effort to sort out the bit around the port, its not too bad. Also, the area around the University and out towards Cottingham is about the same as any other city.

I lived in Winchester for many years, so I know what a good place to live is like. Also know what a crap town is like, as I currently live in Southend.

Not to say that Hull isn't a dump. It is. Its just not as bad as people make out.

One thing to remember about Hull also is that it acts as a service centre to a wide rural catchment which is really quite an attractive place to live.

There are as many Hull fans living in these areas - Beverley, Cottingham, Driffield etc.... as in the city itself.

Can't say there isn't a high level of deprivation in some areas, but as Pieking states the area around the stadium, city centre and marina as well as the hinterland are really as good if not better than many other secondary U.K. cities.

I grew up in East Yorkshire, Support my local team growing up and would say Hull probably has more going for it than somewhere like Sunderland (where I studied) but probably less so than Newcastle (where I now live and work) for example.

If I did move back to the area I would live in one of the feeder towns or outlying villages though as the lifestyle would suit me better.

So, you can slag off Hull itself all you like, but only about half of the people in the football club's catchment actually live there. The rest live in largely middle class rural or semi-rural tranquility and would see somewhere like tyneside or the midlands as overpopulated hell-holes with comparatively lower living standards.

That's true of a lot of clubs. Whatever you thing of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, the surrounding counties have some beautiful areas.

TBF Hull does seem to get an unusually high amount of bad press for a city and the implication of deprivation levels seems rather high. I've been to the Hull area several times, including the surrounding towns/villages and it's appears ok to me.

To be fair, I wouldn't comment on the likes of Nottingham, leicester and Derby as I have never lived there - though I have been to a few good gigs and clubnights in Nottingham. One comment on the Geography of that area would be that you have quite a few options between cities to work and shop in as there are a few population centres close together, and this would probably mean that the more attractive of those would get the bulk of the skills, investment and trade - which would leave the others comparatively deprived. That is the main problem for Sunderland being so close to Newcastle to the point that most people from Sunderland now shop and socialize in Newcastle rather than create wealth in their own city. Hull doesn't have to compete for resources in the shadow of anyone and it shows when you compare it to Sunderland certainly. It may or not be the case in your area.

To be fair though, the biggest ****hole in the north-eastern sector is definitely Middlesboro - and even that isn't as bad as is often made out.

Saying that, gas masks and chemical suits worn by Newcastle fans was p!ss funny though.

As was the "always look in your kids underpants" chant (to "bright side of life" tune after a local *****phile scandal) by mackems.

People who write articles like that always have an axe to grind and as they admit in the first paragraph they are always emotive and rarely based on actual facts.
I have lived in Hull, Newcastle, Derbyshire South London and Nottingham as well as Australia. I'm pretty familiar with Leicester, Chesterfield and Derby as well as working all over the country and seeing loads of towns.
The fact is that I could probably put together a good reasoned argument why all of those places (except Oz) are the worst holes and equally I could write plenty to prove each is brilliant.
At the end of the day its not what these people write, but what the reader wants to believe.

    Well done!

    ;)

Even if he was a Leicester fan, your contention that he has made the most intelligent post is way wide of the mark .. please read my post entitled 'Sherry Trifle' which is, without doubt, more desereving of that epithet..

Further to the comment made by J.B. Septum the author of this article "Dickster the Pox" I think is recommended to go to http://www.rbs.com/media/news/press-releases/2007-press-releases/2007-09-03revealed--locations-.ashx .

As poxy is certain to be able to able to read at least a little, he should be able to understand, by reading the article, that the quality of a large area is not determined by it's smallest part i.e. East Yorkshire by the City and County of Kingston upon Hull. Beverley, said to be one of the most desirable places in which to live in the UK, is but ten miles from the KC stadium and is just one of many towns and villages within easy commuting distance of the city that offer similar benefits. Kingston upon Hull itself has some residential areas that rank with the best in England and fabulous attractions such as the Old Town, the Marina area and the Deep and sadly, as in any large city, it has areas of deprivation.

I have lived in several countries worldwide including Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Romania, Germany, France, Oman, Qatar, Finland and Italy due to my work and my career. As my work is always abroad I could choose where I want to live in the UK and I am not restricted due to work or commuting restrictions. However I have always returned to East Yorkshire for its very high quality of life, countryside, beautiful beaches, low population density and lack of visitors and tourists. The lack of visitors and tourists being because of the bigoted and published opinions of ignorant pr**s like "Mike" and Dickster who have undoubtedly never visited the area. However this lack of visitors is a blessing as we are not blighted with the weekend masses who throng to the countryside and beaches every summer weekend in their little cars and pollute our fields with their left behind rubbish.

Keep your ideas and publish your opinions as much as you wish Dickster the Pox and leave us alone to enjoy the beauty and peace of our region.

Stupid article really, considering they did no research whatsoever and just based their "facts" on comments and opinions. Hull is nice wouldn't consider it a bad place to live by any means.
