I don't know, since I have been around we have steadily improved in tennis, maybe they might start spotting these kids earlier now. Tennis and Golf has always been sports that you need money to play. Perhaps they will open up tennis courts cheaper for kids and maybe more academies. Schools need to be able to spot these potentionals, maybe hold tournaments between other schools then regions. I can't remember doing anything other than Rugby, Cricket and Athletics, no football. They need to open up a wide range of sports allow pupils who like certain sports play them not what they don't enjoy. I know this will need further staff but they can find helpers who will do this for part time work. Rant over
We are bloody good at some sports. We will do very well at the olympics particularly in the sports where there is lot of longer term planning.
Were good at Darts and cycling and Golf. Snooker. motor racing, all martial arts and have had Boxing champions. Also cricket and we have just come second at Wimbledon. been Rugby world champions recently. We generally compete at the highest levels in most sports. We ain't doing so badly really for a small island..
Good one for the positives Banksy However we are one of the most densely populated little islands around and we have won nothing at int footy or tennis in the 40 odd years i have been rooting for us. Be nice to win something in my lifetime that meant something I missed 1966
Everybody who likes sport should care. i'm interested in the boxing and martial arts. Good performances could have a knock on effect for places like the martial arts academy in hengrove. More success the better so it gets kids into sport rather than x boxes. not enough is done but we are getting set up well for the future in stand up contact fighting sports in bristol. GB will do well in sports like rowing and cycling and its down to facilities and excellent coaching and there is something football can learn from.
Tennis should not be held up as barometer of the Isles sporting prowess. How many get the opportunity to really play it? Britain is very good at sport, excellent at many.
Excellent point about the tennis - until it becomes available to all we will just get the odd decent player In sport generally we actually overachieve in terms of World Champions etc for a country of our size
Completely agree - for some reason we get pissy about not being number one at everything. But bare in mind we have a much smaller population than many competing countries and therefore a smaller talent pool (and smaller fan support/income). Plus we have **** facilities compared to other countries and many schools don't really encourage excellence in sport. I think we do a damn good job in competing in most sports.
Also look at how many medals we win in the Paralympics - it will be a shed load. The way we support people with disabilities tells you alot about our society and why we are lucky to live here
The other thing to remember about tennis here in the UK is our weather is **** so the courts aren't open like on the continent. The way to improve us is as I say schools plus indoor facilities. Excellent comment smhbcfc
There are some things in life that are certainties: England's football team will never win a major title. Andy Murray - ditto.
The Question was "Why are Britians so **** at sport". Well the answer is generally we're not, we are however quite **** at spelling..
