If you don't know about De Bono's hats this won't make any sense, but that's never stopped me before... Basically, I was chuckling about some of the abuse that people give each other on here, and two pages later they're debating intelligently or just chatting away like old mates. Like a bunch of Jeckyll & Hyde characters, but more complicated than that. And because I was on the train with nothing much to do, I ended up with this loose adaptation of De Bono's Thinking Hats. Ladies (if there are any here) and gentlemen, I give you... not606 Formula1's Thinking Helmets... Black helmet - The Fanboy/Hater Apparently polar opposites, and utterly unable to peacefully coexist. So why would they be sharing a helmet? Well, they are two sides of the same fanatical coin. Whenever you find one, the other will be along in no time. And thatâs when things get loud and the air gets polluted. Aggression, testosterone, and total belligerent commitment to their own line. On a racetrack itâs exhilarating to watch. In a forum, not so much. White Helmet - The Statistician We've heard the phrase "Lies, damned lies and statistics". But sometimes those numbers are illuminating and intriguing. And this forum knows where to find them. Speed trap figures, sector times etc - it's all good stuff. Keep them coming. Red Helmet - The Pundit Insights, interpretations, hunches, predictions. This forum has all of these in spades. Different perspectives, different opinions, but all of them springing from a genuine enthusiasm for the sport. It wouldn't be half as interesting without them. (next post for the other 3 attachments)
(... and continued...) Blue Helmet - The Team Principal Deciding driver combinations, team orders, key personnel appointments. Twisting the rulebook, twisting the knife, blaming Whitmarsh. It's a high visibility, high powered job, and we all jump in and do it sometimes. Green helmet - The Engineer We all want to see the best drivers, but we love the machinery too. Ingenious, sometimes astonishing solutions to the challenge of building a car that's fast on every circuit in the F1 calendar. The margins are tiny, the details obsessive, and the execution meticulous. The technical knowledge, explanations, exploring options, and analysis of pitlane photos - I've learned a huge amount around here. When this forum wears its green helmet, it's always a fascinating read. Yellow helmet - The F1 Strategist Rules, circuits, supporting the small teams, and other critical decisions. Marshmallow tyres, sprinklers, double points, and other ridiculous nonsense. This forum loves this sport, and has some great discussions about how to make it great again. Are you listening Bernie? (No, of course he isn't.)
I might have a red helmet. But don't worry, I've got some cream for it. Oh, and where's De Bono's sunglasses?
No comment. But I might as well offer this one to the forum... Perhaps as a special award for any member that has earned it.
Lol. It belongs to the forum now. The forum can use it however it chooses, or ignore it for ever. It could just be an award for being a knob. Maybe a light-hearted monthly poll, and the member(!) that gets most votes has to use the purple helmet as their picture for a month. Like the yellow jersey in the Tour De France. If it does get used, my only request is that it's kept light-hearted. I'd want it to be used for good, not evil.
If we're equating it to the Tour de France, I can't help but think it needs a performance enhancing drug.
That's the norm. De Bono invented his "thinking hats" as a way of arranging a more structured discussion about something. Like saying "we're all capable of wearing every hat, but for this discussion, I want Person A to wear the green hat, Person B will wear the blue hat" etc. If I try to explain it further I'll mess it up, so I'll leave the rest to Google. Search for De Bono's thinking hats. As for the "not606 thinking helmets", that was just something I thought of on the train. And the 'award' helmet just emerged from this thread. Unfortunately I feel like I've inadvertently earned the award myself, just by suggesting it in the first place. So in accordance with my own dumb suggestion, I shall adopt it as my avatar for the rest of May, and all of June.
I like the idea of awarding that purple helmet to somebody. As for my ideology, I think I'm wearing the red white and blue helmet. The tricolore
OK, well if enough people like the idea, how about this... Rules It’s a light-hearted award, just as a bit of fun / banter. It’s not for bitching / scoring points. It’s voted in a poll at the end of each month. The person that receives most votes has to use the purple helmet as their avatar for the following month. In the event of a tie, all joint-winners will adopt the helmet for the month. How do we nominate? We have a “Nominations” thread that stays open. Anybody can nominate anyone (including themselves) at any time. They should state: Who they are nominating; and The reason How do we vote? Last 2 days of the month – we have a poll, listing all the nominees, and a link to the “Nominations” thread Month end – the poll closes, the winner is announced. Handing over the helmet The preceding month’s winner relinquishes the purple helmet The new winner adopts it as their avatar for the month ahead. The main rule would be to keep it good-natured, rather than create more sh*t slinging. I don't want any part of slinging sh*t. If enough people are interested, I'll start the "Nominations" thread at the beginning of June. (I've already promised to keep the helmet until the end of June.)
Instead of a purple helmet, if a hamelot wins the award, they should have a purple Lewis Hamilton-esque douchebag hat.
