Nufc.com reporting that he's due for a medical with inter initial loan with a view to permanent.

Not sure how I feel on this. Always thought Santon was our best lb and would have been a better lw.

I reckon he is on a fair big wage so looks as if MA is trying to gather all the funds he can (I am hoping it is to give to the new manager in the summer).

Think under a decent coaching set up Haidara will come good and with Dummett as back up we don't really need Santon.

Terrible decision for me and more than likely just about penny pinching. Easily our best left back. Haidara and Dummett are below PL level for me. In Haidara's case, Hull aside where he did ok, he is a bag of ****e. Couldn't trap a bag of cement, and his passing is dreadful, as is his positional sense. Appears thick as **** too. He is quick and does whip in a lovely cross. Dummett does everything ok but offers nowt going forward.

I'm not saying Santon is some world beater but he is comfortably better than the other two. Our only right back cover which means playing either Anita or Satka out of position if Janmaat gets injured. Only 24 too!

Comical really. That said they are probably thinking we're safe so time to trim down to a minimum. Won't get reinvested now or in the summer of course when Carver is given the permanent role.

A joke really. Best left back at the club by a mile. Haidara and Dummett aren't good enough for the PL. I'm waiting for the coup de grace at around 10.30pm.

Dissapointed about this one. I always liked him. He is our best LB. I think that Dummet will be a decent player for us though I reckon eventually he should be a CB.

Dummet is a much better CB. Santon was probably our best LB even tho his best position and preference is on the right. Haidara will get his arse handed to him week in week out so I can only assume that the santon deal is about trimming the wage bill...the reasons for which could be one of many.

    So we're 1 down already...****ing mint!

I think this is just stupid. Why not just agree a deal now backdated to Summer and at least have him until the Summer. If Inter dont want to deal then tell them to look somewhere else. I don't see any advantage to the club in doing this apart from saving wages - are we really that cheap. I can only hope that we have identified another defender and this is to try and not increase the wage bill.
Santon gives us the best options at left back and frees up Dummett to play in the centre where his lack of forward thinking is not an issue.

Just didn't see this one coming. Not surprised we are losing players but didn't see anyone coming in for a player that's been injured all season.
Haidara really needs to kick on from Hull now as it looks like he'll be our regular lb

Totally agree ...buuuuut...we all know that Ashley knows the price of everything and the value of nothing ..wouldn't surprise me if the lads have to chip in a couple a quid a week for detergent to get their kit washed.

Even IF we have another defender targeted for Santon's wages... the replacement wont be arriving till summer (ideally late summer/day before the season starts as that will save another 2months of wages..and who cares about the team intergration)

Apparently NUFC have just issued an official denial on SSN. Apparently Santon is still our player and nothing has been agreed between the two clubs. Guess MA wants a few more pennies first.

    WILL YOU SELL ANYONE?

I would never, ever rule out selling anyone because the worst thing I could do is over-promise and under-deliver. You will never, ever get me saying never but I would say we’re very difficult sellers. We make it very difficult for people to get our players. We put them on long-term contracts. We are not easy sellers, despite that perception.

As we sit here today I can’t envisage any player we want to retain leaving.

has he been wanting to leave for some time or has he been in the shop window / touted around ??

Didn't realise until I saw on BBC that this is a loan. What's the point. Seems odd from inter even as he has been out all season. Unsure why they would pay a players wages who you may not get much out of until next year.

Seems like it's another one of the Italian specialities that Ashley is serving up; loan and it becomes permanent after 13 games. Stupid decision, regardless of his recent injury record. Our defence is **** as it is. Let's just go and weaken it further and gamble. Ashley all over. I really hope that he is just asset stripping with a view to selling in the summer.

I'm not as upset as most others it seems, but I honestly don't think Davide is good enough for Inter, so it's certainly strange.

As has been pointed out previously, our defence has not changed for 5 years and has gotten progressively worse. Saylor is even more unreliable, Willo is even slower, Colo's shown signs of dementia. What justification does the club have sitting on profits in excess of £40m with the defenders we have, on top of the fact we've surely freed up 2 x "purple" places???? MYM and Santon are/were clearly first choice, it cannot be right that the club accepts having more or less one player per position? As said earlier, Janmaat is the only right back, Haidara now the only left back, Dummett and Colo the only CB's.

Just seems really disgusting to me. Fck all anyone can do about it, but really bile-inducingly poor from Charnley/Ashley/Carr. I see the logic - we've had no Santon so far and are safe, so why bother having him at all? Might as well have cash......wtf?!

I think spending IS coming at the end of this season, if I was an owner I would wait for the desired Head Coach to be in position and then sign the players to create an optimistic aura around the club going into business for the next year. An optimistic fanbase at the beginning of the season is more likely to continue it's purchasing of season tickets and shirts, specifically with new players names on the back.

It's a sound and simple business model that clubs have been using for years.

Edit: Not saying I support said system, but that is just my theory about there decision making.

We're a money making machine and surviving in the PL is all seems to matter. After Saturday, we are possibly safe so why not sell someone? That's the ****ed up logic of those in charge. Predictable. Very predictable. Until that fat **** pisses off though nothing will change. **** him and **** his shops.

Though I remain to be convinced of his abilities at left back, this nevertheless is an awful decision at the worst time.

He came in for a lot of stick during our poor run of form last year, including here on these forums.

He was often at fault for some bad goals we conceded during this time, so I'm surprised to see people calling him 'our best left back' when Haidara was just voted most people's man of the match in the Hull game.

Nevertheless, we're not blessed at LB at the moment however you twist it. I always saw Santon as someone who would potentially adapt better to being played on the wings.

He's right footed to start with, has decent pace and a bit of trickery. I believe in his Inter Milan days he was occasionally employed as a winger also.

So all in all, poor decision. Weakened the defence unnecessarily.
