A rape charge against Dundee United and Scotland footballer David Goodwillie has been dropped. Mr Goodwillie, 22, was accused of assaulting a woman at a house party in West Lothian on 2 January. He was charged on 17 January. His arrest came after a 24-year-old woman said she was sexually assaulted during the party in Armadale. But the Crown Office said there was "insufficient evidence in law" for the case to proceed. A spokesman said: "After full and careful consideration of all the facts, Crown Counsel has instructed no proceedings on the basis that there is insufficient evidence in law. "The case is now closed." Goodwillie made his competitive debut in December 2005 with Dundee United, appearing as a late substitute in the defeat over Rangers at Ibrox. He has represented Scotland at all international youth levels since appearing in 2005 and received his first call-up for the senior team in November last year. During the summer, he has been the subject of transfer interest from Rangers and Cardiff City. And Hull City - apparently.
With an alleged charge like that and a name like his there has to be a plethora of smart@rse quips but I am not game to start them off.
